What is it exactly that is “wrong” with this priestly fraternity, which runs its own chapels? Is it possible for these differences to be reconciled?

The principal problem with the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) is that it is a schismatic society – a condition that was created when its founder, the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, ordained four bishops without papal approval. Pope John Paul II explained this in his apostolic letter titled Ecclesia Dei.

Yes, and indeed the Vatican has been in discussions with the SSPX for years. Given that the doctrine and liturgical customs that those of the SSPX adhere to are, generally speaking, very much in line with Latin-rite Roman Catholicism, we may hope that differences over the status of Vatican II and the development of the Church in the years since Vatican II may eventually be resolved to the satisfaction of both the SSPX and the Vatican. It is something for which we should pray.
