What is wrong with Unitarian Universalism?

Hey everyone. Lately I have been having a lot of doubts about the Church and Unitarian Universalism has been on my mind. Can someone please show me what is wrong with Unitarian Universalism? It seems like a very loving and open minded religion. The one thing that gets me about it is that there can’t be more than one Truth. That is the one thing I have against it.

My problem with UU is that it has, at its core, created a new god, a god in one’s own image and likeness, rather than conforming its truth to the One True God.

When one is doubting one’s faith–as every thinker does–the best thing to do is to find what Church proclaims the Truth, and then conform one’s beliefs to this truth.

It is the height of arrogance, IMHO, to church shop and search for a church that conforms to one’s own beliefs.

Does it not stand to reason that if God exists, then he is calling us to a belief/understanding/faith that causes us to change our way of thinking?

If you are in a church that does not give you pause and make you say, “Wow. I wish my church did not proclaim this” then you are, I propose, in a church of your own making.

And that’s the problem with UU. I daresay that every person in that church is fine with all that UU professes–because it’s a church that allows all to create a god that is in one’s own image.

Well that certainly includes more than one. For instance my SDA friend might tell me SDAs have the truth. My Southern Baptist acquaintances might do the same. And so forth. And PRMerger, unless one shops and searchs Fred Phelps might even proclaim his is the truth.

Not sure what you mean here. Are you saying that it can be true that the Pope is the vicar of Christ and the anti Christ at the same time?

Can baptism save you and only be an ordinance at the same time?

Can Christ really be present, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Eucharist and also not be present at the same time?

Oh, please don’t misunderstand. One must indeed “shop and search”, but what I am saying is that once you “shop and find” you must, logic dictates, change some of your beliefs to that which this Find proclaims.

Fred Phelps might even proclaim his is the truth.

Different Unitarian churches have different flavors.

During my three years or so when I turned my back on God, I tried different things and slowly returned back to the church. The Unitarian Church was a sort of pit stop on the way back to Christianity.

This particular church I attended appeared to be open to all religions. The church had flags commemorating Islam, Hinduism, Budhism, Wicca and oher religions.

It seemed ideal, but there was one problem. Our pastor was essentially a humanist and our sermons consisted of readings from secular humanists.

Spiritually, the church was dead and could not feed my soul.

Also, I grew to see that most of the members, including the pastor, were anti-Christian. A lot of the members were ex-Catholics or ex-Protestants. They found Christianity to be stifling and intolerant. So how can you be a Universalist and hate Christianity? Granted there is another church uptown who is more open to Christian ideals, but it is still spiritually dead in my opinion.

The last straw for me at the particular church I was attending was their version of an Easter celebration.

You see, the church had celebrated Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights and that was cool for me at the time. We celebrated all religions right?

When Easter came, the sermon was about the bible “myths” of the resurrection. and how that is really not what Easter was about. Easter was about renewal and that’s it.

How disrespectful! At the end of the service, Easter balloons were released outside.

That did it for me.

In summary, coming from Catholicism, you will find Unitarian Universalism, empty, boring and spiritually diluted.

Oh, please don’t misunderstand. One must indeed “shop and search”, but what I am saying is that once you “shop and find” you must, logic dictates, change some of your beliefs to that which this Find proclaims.

Of course not PR. The Pope can not be vicar and anti at the same time, etc. That is why we must search in order to determine what we believe. But somehow I knew you would get a laugh over Fred.

I don’t think Unitarian Universalists have Mass but I knew what you meant. But what’s wrong with balloons? At a local Catholic parish near me, they have an Easter egg hunt after the 9 am Mass every Easter. And on Christmas Eve I recall Father saying none of us know who has been naughty and who has been nice. Only Santa. But in the morning we all shall know. We still had Mass.

Well no according to my belief, PR, I don’t go around calling the Pope the anti Christ. But then I don’t necessarily go around calling for instance a Unitarian Universalist who strives to follow at least the spirit of Christ teachings and walks the walk in love and compassion, the anti Christ either.

I didn’t say in that case they would necesarily be guided by the Holy Spirit. But I know you don’t understand me sometimes PR. But that’s alright. I confess I’m a very complicated person and sometimes I don’t understand myself at times. But we’re still friends and I don’t always understand someone else either. Although even if I don’t always subscribe to it, I do usually at least understand your POV. Peace to you PRMerger.
