What is your favorite Christmas Hymn?

As we are currently in the Octave of Christmas, I’ve been feeling extra Christmas-y this week. All those carols I haven’t listened too during Advent I’ve been listening and singing along with ever since Christmas Day.

So, I was wondering, which Christmas hymn is your favorite? I’m speaking here of religious Christmas songs, not Jingle Bells and the like.

I love them all equally, but first among those equals has to be The First Noel, specifically the nine verse version found here.

Interestingly, I never really liked Silent Night - that is, until the choir at Mass Christmas Day sang it so perfectly during Communion. If ever a moment could be called a perfect moment, it was that one. I am also fond of O, Holy Night.

So, what is your favorite Christmas Hymn?
 
I like listening to Hark! The Herald Angels Sing a lot. It’s glorious and effectively communicates the joyous mystery of the incarnation. I particularly like this rendition: youtube.com/watch?v=wbdvo019mgM

I also like * Mary’s Boy Child * for the same reason.

I like the ones you mention in the opening thread. Like you I always found Silent Night a bit twee, until I heard it sung chorally and now I like it much better.

I also love “O little Town of Bethleham”, “It came upon the midnight clear” and “While Shepherds watched their flocks by night.”
 
The Christmas hymn I love singing the most, though I don’t hear it often sung at church, is Of The Father’s Love Begotten.

O Come All Ye Faithful, in both English and Latin, and Angels We Have Heard On High are up there as well.

I went to a church for First Fridays and it had a communion rail; the gate had “Venite Adoremus” as part of the metalwork of the gate. Words that I had sung for years took on greater meaning in their proximaty to Blessed Sacrement exposed in the monstrance. I still get a little choked up when I sing or hear the song. So simple but time seems to stand still when I hear the chorus.

Great choices. I was thurifer for our EF Mass Christmas day. The choir did Adeste Fideles, in Latin of course, as part of the communion music. What surprised and impressed me was the 10 year old altar boy who was my boat boy. He was next to me, and I could hear him softly joining in the music. He actually knew it in Latin.

“Carol of the Bells”, any version, but especially by the TranSiberian Orchestra. (Christmas Eve/Sarajevo) 😉
 
“O Holy Night” is my hands down favorite, with “Oh Come all Ye Faithful” being a very close second.

I always get teary-eyed when we sing “Fall on your knees” … makes me feel like actually doing it!
