Okay, now you’ve got me started. I should probably start a new thread for this (sorry to the original poster) but I’m not. Have you ever heard Brenda Lee’s “The Little Blue Bell?”

By the way, did anyone see Joyeux Noel, a 2006 movie based on the true Christmas truce declared by French and German troops? I have not seen it but I was told it is great.

Gidget, yes I think I do remember the Little Blue Bell!! Bits and pieces…it’ll probably come back at 2am in the morning…

I haven’t seen Joyeux Noel, but I have a (little known but wonderful) song about it by a singer/hammer dulcimerist named John McCutcheon. It’s on a Christmas album he made with a group called Trapezoid way back in the '80’s.
I’d include the lyrics here but that might infringe on copyright laws or something. It’s an incredible, powerful song.

will check better, never seem to find it on program guide, but our local stations don’t show a lot of stuff that is on national network, maybe that is why. would it be on ABC Family on Satellite?

have seen at least 3 versions of the WW1 Christmas truce story over the years which I guess is based on a true story.

I am a sucker for those smark-alek-kid-does-not-believe-in-Santa movies too. My grandkids think it is dumb but I like the one with Jaqkelyn Smith as the mom of kids who live up north someplace and have to save the North Pole from attack or something. And The Santa Clause I, follow-ups not as good, but Tim Allen is funny. Bernard the elf is one of my favorite Christmas story characters of all time.

Yup - really happened on the Western Front (I think it was the Christmas of 1914 - the first Christmas of the war - Brits and Germans got out of the trenches and played a soccer game etc)
 
Not sure if anyone mentioned “A Christmas Story” a 1950’s Christmas … and I certainly agree with the Prof about the “Merry Christmas,” which I’ve seen too … how about “Silent Night” for another WWII movie setting in Germany (… actually filmed in Quebec.) These movies are historical and that makes them very nice.

Their are alot of movies like “The Christmas Box” or “The Christmas Letter” and whatever the latest movie that is heartwarming like that comes out … are nice for the 90 year olds, and, are a kind of substitute for living maybe, but, what can one do when you are 90 and a little housebound in the evenings??? These are often American tales of Christmas, like those I mentioned earlier.

IFC Channel is a nice alternative channel and on Dish 200, but often the Christmas movies are on the locals or on Hallmark, TMC or AMC … EWTN has Christmas movies too!
 
I can’t believe it…

NO ONE mentioned “Home Alone”???

We love watching the first part of “Jesus of Nazareth”, followed by the old standbys (“It’s A Wonderful Life”, etc.) but we always go from the sublime to the ridiculous!

HAVE to watch “Home Alone” (1 & 2) every year!
 
I don’t think anybody’s mentioned The Nativity Story, either, which was released just a year or so ago. It was good; Mary was played by a young girl who had an uncanny resemblance to a young Olivia Hussey.

Carroll’s Christmas is a recent funny, warped remake of A Christmas Carol. It’s pretty good.

Home Alone (the first one)
Scrooge (1951 Alistair Sim version of “A Christmas Carol”)
Christmas in Connecticut (1945 Barbara Stanwyck movie)
Miracle on 34th Street (original version)

I also like Christmas episodes of sitcoms, especially old, classic sitcoms – such as the Ricardos and the Mertzes reminiscing while they decorate the Christmas tree, little Cindy Brady asking Santa to heal her mom’s laryngitis so she can sing at church, the two great Christmas episodes of the Mary Tyler Moore show (one was when Mary had to work on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and the other was a Christmas party on Sue Ann’s set – in November, because that’s when Sue Ann had to film her Christmas show!), and a wonderful Christmas episode of Father Knows Best (1954, with Wallace Ford as “Nick”).

My favorite sit-com Christmas show (wait, is this a hijack? Oh, well, never mind, here goes!) is the episode of “Alice” where they do a take off on O. Henry’s “Gift of the Magi”–Alice sells her silver coffee pot to buy her son, Tommy, a guitar case and Tommy sells his guitar to buy his mom the matching silver creamer for her coffee pot. Vera sells her record player to buy Flo a genuine leather frame (stamped with western designs) for her black velvet oil painting of Johnny Cash and Flo sells the picture to buy Vera Burt Bacharach albums! Of course, Mel gets wind of the idea, sneers at his employees’ foolishness and steals the presents from their little Christmas party… in order to pair them up with the gifts they hocked (which he bought back for them!)

I also liked the episode where they did a take off on “A Christmas Carol”.

I bought Brenda Lee’s Christmas Album last year just for that song. :crying: :crying: I’m a sucker for punishment. Conway Twitty’s “Ding-a-Ling the Christmas Bell” is another similar one.

I pick it up in Canada on cable so not sure what to tell you there.

That’s “The Night They Saved Christmas”! It’s my favorite Christmas ‘movie’. I love Art Carne as Santa and Paul Williams as his elf.

I was able to see Brenda in concert (a Daddy-date a year after my mom died). It was a Christmas concert and believe it or not she did NOTsing The Little Blue Bell. 😦

I’ve got another oldie Christmas show, along the lines of television program specials – how about the Walton’s Christmas special? I haven’t seen that one in years either. Oh … and the Santa Claus – yep that’s a great one. Jack Frost is not too bad either (the dad dies and comes back as a snowman 😛 )… and hasn’t anyone mentioned Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer yet?

Oh, The Walton’s! Yeah! I’ve looked in stores and have found the series but not the Christmas special. It’s probably available on ebay or somewhere. My favorite part is where Olivia gives John Boy the stack of Big Chief notebooks when he thinks no one knows he’s been writing. Good night, John Boy…Good night, Mary Ellen…
