To make matters worse my home town is Rockford, IL and according to news articles I’ve read it has the dubious distinction of being one of the 25 worst places in the USA to try and find a job. But of course there are no lay-offs in heaven, and God is still the CEO there and owns the cattle on a thousand hills and if he has to turn this world every way but loose he’ll help me find a job and peace and whatever else I need. Right now I’m a “success story looking for a place to happen”

Anyone remember the Arnold Schwartzeneger movie “The Last Action Hero” Arnold played a father who tried to buy his son an action hero doll, and had a whole lot of misadventures in the attempt.

I remember that movie – but I think it was called something else. “The Last Action Hero” is about a little boy who gets a magic movie ticket that allows him to jump in and out of a movie.

Anyone remember the name of the movie with the two nutty dads fighting over the doll? (oops, I mean “action figure”) “Jingle All the Way” maybe?

Jingle All the Way is the name of the Schwartznegger film.
 
I have many, many favorite Christmas movies (far too many to list), but over the years, a certain tradition in my family has built up.

Christmas season doesn’t begin until Thanksgiving night, when everyone sits around the fireplace and Miracle on 34th Street goes into the VCR (black and white, never colorized, and never, ever the remake). No Christmas movies are watched beforehand, no Christmas carols are played beforehand, nothing except seeing Santa Claus in the parade that morning.

Once Miracle on 34th Street ends, Christmas season begins.

Um… does The Nightmare Before Christmas count? I just kinda like the way they portrayed just how different Halloween and Christmas are yet they sit right next to each other on the calendar.

It also kinda showed me the interesting transition of the gloomy All Souls Day season with the warm and fuzzy Christmas one. :o

I love that version of Miracle on 34th St. Every Christmas parade I see makes me think of that movie! It is one of my many favorites!
 
I have favorites for different reasons the meaning is the main thing but some are favorites because of the memories they bring of my childhood and the feelings I had as a child at Christmas! And some bring wonderful memories of my friends and family!

I know there are ones I am forgetting, I will add them as I think of them.

My father is a guitar player and his best friend played the drums, The Little Drummer Boy reminds me of him because he died during the Christmas season and they played the song at his funeral. It was so fitting of him. So that movie is really special to me because I can just see Barry Gilmore in heaven playing his drums for Jesus!

As for It’s A Wonderful Life I’d rather watch it any time of the year other than Christmas. I watched it a few days after I lost my job and I found it theraputic. Matter of fact it was one of the things that kept me from jumping into the Rock River and ending it all. Losing that job hurt me more than anything I’d ever experienced. Fortunately the time since has seemed to ease the pain somewhat.

I have the Littlest Angel (Loretta Young) on a record album. I haven’t heard it in years because I don’t have a turntable, but can still hear the whole thing in my head; it was one of those records we played over and over and over. Loretta Young had such a wonderful gentle voice. Even thinking of it makes me tear up.

If you get EWTN, they are airing some Loretta Young movies and if I’m not mistaken, there will be a couple airing at Christmas.

My father died during the Christmas season as well. For his funeral the minister preached about and read Luke 2;25-32 about the old man Simeon seeing Jesus before dying. That was the case with my father. He accepted Jesus as his Savior just months before dying. Now every time I hear or read Luke Chapter 2 it reminds me of my dad.
 
Catholic Digest has a list called “worth watching in December,” which includes these TV movies … on December 6th “The Christmas Choir” on the Hallmark Channel … and on December 7th CBS has the Hallmark HOF Movie “Front of the Class.”

Also for Film: “The Class,” “Bedtime Stories,” “Defiance,” and “Come What May.”

Watching *new *Christmas Movies has really become my favorite thing, and only if they are well recommended. Movies that are a little older and have never been shown on TV, are the next group that are sometimes good, when they are highly recommended when at the theater.

Ovation TV is having a battle of the Nutcrackers. The one tonight was, IMO, unwatchable.

I can’t hardly resist promoting Dish as we have it, and it includes RFDTV, which actually has Polkas and Country Music. Rod Serling wrote a tv modernization of A Christmas Carol called Carol for Another Christmas that was shown only once, in 1964, very controversial. I was 12 when it was shown and it made a huge impression on me because of the way it portrayed the victims of Hiroshima. I’d like to find it, have been searching the internet and not coming up with anything. Does anyone remember it besides me?

I’m so happy to see someone mention this. I only got a chance to see it once years ago, but very memorable and special. I recently watched another movie kind of similar to it. It was called A Time to Remember; it was very sweet.

I kind of like The Christmas Box, with Richard Thomas and Mauren O’Hara. But I’d rather watch it closer the Thanksgiving than Christmas. It’s a little slow moving, but a good story about the importance of spending time with your child over working hard.

There is a TV movie called The Christmas List that I like. Although it is sort of centered around Santa and a wish list that an adult woman makes, you can actually replace what happens in the movie with the idea that the woman is receiving blessings during the season. In the end of the movie, she ends up married to a nicer man than the one she was engaged to and that man’s son gets a mom (and a baby brother/sister). The one who she was engaged to was taking forever to settle down to marry and was stingy, although a fairly likable guy. It’s the little boy that finds her wish list and puts it in the Santa Mail Box in a store. It also ends with her mother involved in a Christmas Eve celebration, instead of forgoing Christmas to do her own thing. The show ends with these lyrics to a song, “Singing praises to his name, singing praises, glory halleillah, singing praises to his name.” Now, I guess some people would take that to mean that praises were to be given to Santa for granting the wishes. But, not me. There is no Santa in the movie and you have no idea how all these things she wanted come about. So you can take it to be a movie about Santa or you can take it to be a movie about the blessings of God that happen to one woman and those people important to her that Christmas.

But the film can be viewed on a private console at the Paley Center for Media in New York and Los Angeles and at the Film and Television Archive at the University of California, Los Angeles.
