I could not agree with you more. That being said, however, there are many individual scenes in that film that are not morally offensive and are tremendously funny, such as the one quoted above. What we need is a severely edited version of the film preserving the good parts.

It doesn’t mock Christianity or Judaism - not a bit. It mocks false ‘faith’ - that being the sort of credulity and ignorance that created the overly legalistic Pharisees, and the sort of WOULD worship a Brian Cohen (a false messiah who TELLS people he isn’t the Messiah) instead of the true Messiah.

And it mocks the stupidity and gullibility of some humans (I mean imagine someone singing ‘always look on the bright side of life’ at the point of death! The purpose wasn’t to mock the Crucifixion, rather the reactions of the people around Brian to it)

I don’t know. It has been awhile since I watched that film, but isnt there a part where Brian when trying to get rid of the crowds following him tells them something like “you dont need to follow me, you don’t need to follow anyone. Think for yourselves.” Which kind of seems to maybe imply that Christians are unthinking troglodytes for faithfully following Christ and His Church, and that the enlightened “think for themselves” and do as they please. I don’t know maybe I am remembering it wrong, what did you think of this, and other similar parts if there are any?

And I think regardless of who was being mocked during that crucifixion seen that it was deeply offensive. To in any way mimic in a mocking style what Christ did for us on the cross is very hurtful.

In addition to these things there are other offensive parts of the film including nudity and maybe other things, but like I said it has been awhile since I have seen it.

I don’t think the ‘you don’t need to follow anyone’ comment was meant to apply to all Christians, or all people. Certainly taken on its face it could just as well be seen to advocate political anarchy as irreligion - remember Brian was also involved in political rebellion against the Romans.

And to be honest, some Christians, even Catholic, as well as some non-Christians, ARE unthinking troglodytes! Not because their core beliefs are necessarily wrong, rather their attitude to their religion is askew (those who are superstitious in their practice, for example).

Nudity? Three brief and entirely comic scenes. As if anyone could find a nude Spike Milligan or a nude Graham Chapman an occasion of sin! :rotfl:

And mocking the Crucifixion? Crucifixion was a commonly dealt out punishment by the Romans. People would have reacted to being crucified in all sorts of ways, some good, some bad, and some probably as silly as the singers in the movie.

May as well say the Gospel’s portrayal of a bad thief hanging beside Christ was mocking His crucifixion.

there is female nudity in there as well if I’m not mistaken.
