de gustibus non est disputandum
There is no arguing over taste

Both films are trash. Sheesh. Since when did blasphemy and sacrilege become entertainment?

DustinsDad
Sure, both are trash, but they are FUN trash.

I’ve used Every Sperm is Sacred as a means of lightening up discussions with non-catholics about the catholic view of contraception. It’s parody by exaggeration.

Life of Brian is a sideways homage to Christianity. Always Look on the Bright Side of Life at the crucification scene is, ironically, exactly how we, as Catholics, SHOULD approach the Crucification: a sad event which has a bright side beyond reason!

one other little thing about LoB… there were other messianic sects around the same time frame (and within a hundred year span)… only three took off, and only one really survives. Orthodox/Catholic Eucharistic Christianity, Gnostic Christianity, and the cult of Simon Magus.

And I do love the bit “Let him amongst you without sin cast the first stone.” …thwak! … “Mother, I hate it when you do that!”

nope. the glorious I AM did it all for me. and all HE asks of me is to believe.
To believe, yes …

AND to obey the ten commandments and the two great ones …

AND to perform the works of mercy he indicated in teh Gospels (feed the poor, visit the sick and imprisoned etc etc), since certainly entry to heaven is denied to those who fail in this regard …

AND to mortify yourself (take up your cross every day) …

AND to love one another as Jesus has loved us (which he illustrated by service, the washing of his Apostles’ feet) …

AND to obey the Church founded upon the Apostles (‘he who hears you hears me, he who rejects you rejects me’)

 ‘not everyone who calls me LORD LORD will be saved’

hi lilym, it’s me again. sure is a big to do list. well, here is my question for you. are you under grace or the law? grace says it is finished, while the law says you need to keep me perfectly. i only know one who ever kept the law perfectly and that was jesus. if you would like, galatians is a great epistle on grace and the law.i will read it as well. then lets sharpen each other.oh and by the way, being in grace, the holy spirit now works in me and through me. i don’t have to cover all the bases anymore, he does that . i just become his hands and feet, not for my honor or good works, but for his, and his alone.

O Fortuna velut luna statu variabilis, semper crescis aut decrescis;
vita detestabilis nunc obdurat et tunc curat ludo mentis aciem, egestatem,
potestatem dissolvit ut glaciem.

Sends shivers up my spine every time I hear that!

Not sure if there is an equivalent idiom. Perhaps *Gratias tibi ago pro custodia tua *(literally: Thank you for your protection).

my favorite latin phrase is :

“Praeceptis salutaribus moniti, et divina institutione formati audemus dicere”

i just love the way it is chanted.

I know that this is a very old thread, but I just had to chime in. This is my favorite one right now, and I’ve been typing it a lot here lately. I usually type it in all caps.
ADOREMUS IN AETERNUM SANCTISSIMUM SACRAMENTUM!
Translation: WE WILL FOREVER ADORE THE MOST HOLY SACRAMENT!

I wanted to use it in my signature, but I think that someone else already does…

It’s actually “Let us adore forever the most holy Sacrament”…

Oh, thanks! I was close, but you’re right!

The Gloria Patri is also becoming a favorite of mine. I especially love to hear it chanted.

I learned this Bible verse/phrase as a song while in the Philippines. Some parishes there sing it after Communion, as it is a prayer for vocations. I remember one night the choir and I were practicing for Mass the next day, singing this song, and one of the priests ran to us and chimed in. He joked that the prayer was working already.

Mitte, Domine, operario in mensam tuam. Messis quidem multa, operarii autem pauci.

Roughly translates: Send, O Lord, workers into Your harvest. The harvest is great, but the workers are few (See St. Matthew ix 37-38).

I like the beginning of the Introit for Dominica Resurrectionis:
Resurrexi, et adhuc tecum sum, alleluia.
I have arisen again, and I am still with You, alleluia.

Something from my St. Benedict medal:

CRUX SACRA SIT MIHI LUX
NUNQUAM DRACO SIT MIHI DUX

English:
The Holy Cross be my light
Let not the dragon be my guide

My favourite latin phrase comes from the martyr Iranaeus:

Gloria Dei vivens homo
vita autem hominis, visio Dei

**The Glory of God is man fully alive
To be fully alive, man must see God. **
