What is your favorite mystery film?

Mine is a little-known film noir gem called The Verdict (1946), starring Sidney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Joan Lorring. It is superb, with a twist ending that is sure to satisfy any mystery lover. The director of the film is the talented Don Siegel, who also directed the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956).

How about you?
 
I don’t know if I have a favorite mystery film as I don’t go to the movies very often and haven’t for a long time. I used to enjoy the old black and white TV shows about Sherlock Homes-the originals. Does that count?
 
One of my favorites is “Rebecca” with Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine.

“Jane Eyre” was excellent, too. (the old black and white version, with Orson Welles
and Joan Fontaine).
 
I liked “The Pink Panther” “Charades” and “Leave Her To Heaven.”

“Leave Her To Heaven” was about a wicked, scheming woman who would do anything to keep her husband exclusively for herself: in other words, no other loved ones were welcome in their lives. His brother drowned under her watch. She deliberately destroyed their unborn baby by falling down the stairs - she planned it. Then she framed her own sister after ingesting poison. Everyone thought her sister did it.

That movie is very old, but the plot was ahead of its time.

Yes, it counts. I loved watching Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. John Watson on television. Great entertainment!
 
Blue Velvet gets my vote. It’s an extremely secular film, though, so if anyone here actually decides to watch it, they should know that going in.🤷

Ah yes, Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution. Charles Laughton turns in his customary great performance and Marlene Dietrich is also quite good. The ending, however, is over-the-top, in my view. Still, a great movie!
 
Oh, and I just remembered The Third Man, which is my runner up vote. Plus, that one was written by a Catholic author, so I don’t mind recommending it to everyone here. The novel was good, too, and the soundtrack is also quite striking and memorable.

I’ve never seen *The Verdict *and in fact I don’t think I’d even heard of it until now. But it certainly sounds the kind of film I’d like. I must try and get hold of it.

An unforgettable Peter Lorre movie is M.

I like *Charade, *which Arizona mentioned earlier on this thread (#5), though I’d classify it as a comedy thriller rather than as a mystery. The top mystery movie on my list would be Vertigo.
 
For me it will always be “The Hound of the Baskervilles” by
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.

Also Rebecca. my all time favorite. Although it has an unintentionally hilarious scene in which the deranged housekeeper show the lady of the house the previous spouse’s undergarments and brags that they were made especially for Rebecca by a convent of French nuns.

I agree. Have you ever come across a Miss Marple story by Agatha Christie entitled Strange Jest? (Originally published in a magazine under the title Buried Treasure.) There’s an interesting connection.

These are two of my favorites also.

I have never heard of The Verdict either.

I also liked Laura and Leave Her to Heaven.

No, seriously.

I never get tired of it. It’s a fun comedy/mystery.

I love how they did the three different endings.
 
The Nero Wolfe series, with Timothy Hutton as Archie Goodwin and Maury Chaykin as Wolfe. Spell binding acting.
