What is your favorite non-Catholic belief?

Interesting. The Pastor I had growing up told a group of “protestant” clergy that they would have to answer to God as to why they weren’t Catholic. Evidently he was suggesting that if they weren’t Lutheran then they should be Catholic. He’s quite a guy eh?

For me it’s Buddhism and Wicca. Yes, it’s probably still a mystery to all of you;)
 
Judiasm, for me. My hubby’s background is jewish and I have learned a lot about the faith that intriques me. Beyond that probably Buddhism because I like some of the teachings.

Heathen Reconstructionism. Though only if they actually believe in pagan cosmology.
 
Judaism and Sufism (Islamic mysticism). I can’t make up my mind.

Sufi stories and poetry are the best thing since Christ’s stories and resemble them in their paradoxical beauty. They also have a special devotion to Jesus. However, I don’t think I could accept Muhammad as the last prophet or Jesus as only a prophet.

How do you reach that conclusion? Reform Judaism has made an effort to structure its services around the protestant model. I can’t think of any particular thing that it has adopted or teaches that is aimed against Christian beliefs, other than traditional Jewish beliefs.
 
Personally Buddhism in my view is the most beautiful of all world religions after Christianity, because of its emphasis on compassion, non-violence, respecting creatures and nature, the interconnection of all things, the ineffable mystery of the Absolute, and its very rich treasury of philosophy of mind and conciousness. Buddhism is also not tainted by Inquisitions, violent conquests, or attempts to exterminate heretics or freethinkers. Not every aspect of the religion is free from contradiction or flaw (in my view some aspects of Buddhism are too negative towards worldly existence, the self and also the natural world) but it is probably the best alternative I could see to Christianity.

Second that 😃 The morality of Sikhism appeals to me on a level that I don’t find with other religions, and the Sikh people I know (living in the most Sikh area of England) are some of the most compassionate people I’ve ever met.

Either Urantia or I’d make up my own like L. Ron and become a gazillionaire bilking the woefully gullible entertainment types who have more money than sense. 😃

If we are talking just non-Catholic I’d either pick a conservative Episcopalian Church or go back to my Baptist roots…I guess

If it had to be non-Christian I’d say Judaism but I don’t really understand how one converts to Judaism.

To not be Christian, and now, to not be Catholic, is something I don’t think much about. I once had a co-worker who was raised B’hai and it was just astounding to me that all he knew of Christianity was the biased stuff out in the media. Given the fact that I was Southern Baptist at the time, I think he expected me to pull out some snakes to dance with at any moment.😃
 
I have always found Zoroastrianism interesting; and more recently, I’ve been reading up on the Society of Friends.

Lamaist Buddhists did violently drive out tribal peoples from Tibet long ago. It was pretty well known what a stranglehold of fear the Lamas had over Tibet even a few decades ago. I’m trying to find more information about this.
 
It’s an interesting mindset the OP displays here… the attitude that religion is just some arbitrary choice based off of your own personal fancy. And of course no one religion can actually be true. :rolleyes: Can’t say it surprises me though. I think if you were able to take a poll of everybody in the world, this would be the prevailing viewpoint on the purpose of religion. This PC culture of today has really done too much damage.

I read it as ‘which do you find most interesting, other than your own?’. You don’t have to take everything as a personal attack on your faith, you know.

Hey, my Mom’s best friend is a house leader for Urantia. My Mom was even into it, for a while. She got kind of freaked out by all the outer space stuff, though, and went back to liberal Protestantism.

Pardon, I seem to have the bellyaching mixed up; still, there’s no cause to take the OP to task for basically asking ‘hey, what other beliefs do you think are pretty neat?’. So he’s an atheist; so what? If anything, be glad that he’s interested in religion of any sort.

Even if the Op meant the post as Exoflare states I’ve chosen to read it as you do.

Other faiths do have beauty and some truth so I see nothing wrong with acknowledging this. That isn’t being PC. Its the truth.

Admitting that Buddhism has goodness in it doesn’t take away from the fact that Catholicism has the fullness of truth in it.
