I don’t pertain to any religions but I find satanism to be a really intriguing religion. So I’d have to either say satanism or Judaism because my boyfriend is jewish.

What is everyone else’s favorites?
Favorite as in “I cant beleive they believe that” favorite? If so then I would have to say Jehovahs Witnesses.

I was thinking of it more along the lines of, if the Catholic Church didn’t exist, what would you be?
In that case I would have to say none. If the Catholic Faith was non-existant I would be Atheist.

oooo oooo i know i know…

since i have a big interest in sci fi…
i would become a scientologist 😃
i think the thought of being an alien once is quite amusing…

Well not being Catholic,

Been around Baptist and Nazarene,

maybe Mennonite?

dont know, perhaps something along the lines of native, dont know the name, the great spirit, wolves, nature.

Im somewhat fasinated with India, but vishnu scares me, I think I watched too many sinbad movies.

dont know having been on that atheist side, I no longer can imagine or entertain a world without the Lord. So I find myself poor at these musings. So perhaps I could tie a braid in my hair, and ride a horse up the mountain and simply be.

Hey, my Mom’s best friend is a house leader for Urantia. My Mom was even into it, for a while. She got kind of freaked out by all the outer space stuff, though, and went back to liberal Protestantism.
Yeah it’s goofier than a Marx Bros. movie. But I looked at it so I could talk (semi) intelligently about it with a friend who was into it. I was also amazed when I read Kerry Livgren’s auto-biography and found out he tried it briefly on his journey into Christianity. I’ve been a big Kansas-A.D.-Livgren fan since the 70’s.

Peace,
+N

You mean Shiva? 😉 Vishnu is the preserver, the middle part of the sower-tender-reaper analogy. Shiva is the destroyer – but even that isn’t really so scary, compared to, say, the events prophesied in John’s Apocalypse.

If the Catholic faith was non-existant, I would be Methodist.
If the Catholic Faith was non-existent there would be no Anglicans, hence no Methodists. But I know what you mean – I like the Methodist/Wesleyan tradition myself and would probably be a Free Methodist or an Anabaptist if I wasn’t Catholic. I definitely would not be a member of the United Methodist Church though.

the one with the arms . . . which is that?

I think Shiva’s the one with lots of arms. Or is it that lots of Hindu gods have many arms?

Im starting to think that too.

interesting its a trinity based religion. . . although no one seems to want to admit that.

I agree. The United Methodist Church has become a bit too liberal for me. Free Methodists are more traditional. I have a friend who is a Methodist pastor. His wife is a practicing Catholic. Interestingly enough, when I was looking for a new Bible, both my pastor (Catholic) and my Methodist pastor friend recommended the RSV-CE. 👍

If the Catholic Church didn’t exist I’d almost certainly be Eastern Orthodox (specifically Serbian Orthodox, given my family background). I feel that after Catholicism they’ve best preserved the faith as it came from the Apostles.

If Christianity didn’t exist … don’t know really, I imagine Buddhist. None of the other faiths appeals much really.

One needs to be careful in making sure that you are using the word “trinity” to describe the same conception of deity when comparing religions. There are many religions that have triads of Gods or Goddesses, and those that have Gods or Goddesses with triple aspects, but those are not identical to the Christian teaching of the Trinity.

For instance:
hinduism.about.com/library/weekly/aa061703a.htm
“We have to understand that basically, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are not three distinct deities, independent from each other, but they represent in fact the same Supreme Force, in its three different aspects.”

This is quite different from the Christian teaching about the Christian Trinity, which teaches that God the Father, God the Son and God the Spirit are, in fact, three separate individuals, though linked in a (to my mind extremely convoluted) specific way.

Whatever God’s religion is

No I’m not trying to get a reaction or anything of the sort. Have you read on the LaVeyan branch of satanism? its actually quite interesting. When I first found out that they don’t actually believe in the devil and that hes more symbolic that was quite a surprise to me.
Bishop Fulton Sheen commented that perhaps the greatest mistake we could make in the 20th century would be to believe that the devil does not exist.

It appears to be the same for the 21st century too.

To deny the devil… leads to denial of sin and evil. No wonder atheists are so very lost… and don’t usually know it,

I don’t have a “favorite” non-Catholic belief. But I do find it both intriguing and sad that many non-Catholics have a non-belief in the importance and status of the Blessed Mother.

The content of this thread reminds me of what John Stuart Mill once wrote:

"And the world to each individual, means the part of it with which he comes in contact-his party, his sect, his church

“The same causes that make him a Churchman in London, Would make him a Buddhist or a Confucian in Pekin”

yes, I read something like that, distinct deities but separate, but also tied together for all to achieve whatever, one site said but with the disclaimer you stated.

I know the trinity is not the same as the christian view, but I was surprised to find it in Hindu. And Im under the impression that Islam isnt crazy about Hindu. Makes me think, thats all.

As for the convoluted thoughts of the Trinity, Father, Son, Holy Spirit, imagine 3 so in “tune” and in agreeance with one another, you cannot see the difference between them, perhaps that would help? Theres no conflict like in some other gods, only perfect unity, one but not the same.
