What is your opinion of human genetic pairing?

I was reading about a new process whereby people select dates based on genetic pairing. The goal is to prevent passing on undesirable traits; strengthening offspring, as well as to match personalities. All the couples don’t necessarily meet and fall in love. I find it very interesting. With genetic engineering; the trend is inevitable. I don’t really have a problem with it. What is your opinion?

As with most things in our life: Just because we have the *ability *to do something does not mean that we should.

If you happen to have a news source or article to speak more about it, that would be nice. Church teaching is clear that conception should be done within the framework of a marriage so that spiritual growth follows with biological and educational growth of a child.

I believe that is called Eugenics or selective breeding. We do this with livestock to get the best and strongest cows etc. If it is forced on people it is wrong and basically what Hitler tried to do.

However, if someone wants volunatrily to pick a date solely on how their kids might turn out genetically, go right ahead. That is their choice. They will suffer their own consequnces as that is not a solid ground for a lasting relationship. I also have the choice to think they are CRAZY for doing so.

Shopping around for the desirable factors (similar to car shopping), check under the hood - get a Consumer Report factor sheet.

I’d suggest relearned from the Nazi mistake. They wanted the master race, the perfect genetic human beings. Walking movie star bodies. Unfortuneately, as we know - these people often suffer from self inflicted “movie star” minds.

Genetic coding is not predictive of a person’s personality. Unless they find a genetic code for the virtues, for the ability to remain close to God, for altruism, for the willingness to suffer, wisdom, the ability to overcome adversity, etc.

I think it could go both ways. In countries and throught most of the world matchmaking is common due to things like wealth, looks and personality. This is just a 21st century version of it.

I don’t have a genetic test, but I’m attracted to guys with blue eyes who are strong and atleast a bit taller than me. THAT is a form of genetic pairing…just one that’s on a much more primal nature.

I don’t think people are ever going to bare their deepest thoughts to a matchmaker.If you are referring to a card which asks for likes and dislikes that tells you little about the person.I might like skiing,book learning,romantic candlelight suppers but can’t stand my companion’s personality.

Eugenics is the idea of creating a “master race” through selective breeding. Genetic pairing would allow potential mates to screen each other for abnormalities, like Cystic Fibrosis, Tay Sachs, Sickle Cell Anemia, etc. You could still marry and have children, but at least you would be aware of the risk factors. Incidentally, Rabbis WILL NOT marry a couple, if both carry the Tay Sachs gene. It is deemed irresponsible to create a child with such a horrible disease!

I’m not talking about modern day matchmakers…I’m talking about traditional ones.
