I wish the poll had included an option for “I like to see a mantilla worn in church.” At my first parish (during me conversion) there was a lovely lady who wore one. In talking with her, I found out that she had simply continued to wear them when they abruptly fell out of “fashion” many years ago. She wore it mass after mass, even though she was the only one. I liked seeing it on her!
I’m fond of traditional things, and there are many things that can help us focus on our faith and reverence (such as a rosary), I was intimidated by the idea of starting to wear a veil, because of many of the reasons listed: not wanting to stand out, not wanting to offend, not wanting others to think I’d wear it in order to appear “holier-than-though”…not wanting to cause controversy.
Finally, after prayer and examining my conscience, I decided to give it a go this Lent. I bought a black and a beige one, but I am also using simple scarves which perhaps draw less attention. So far, I find the act of covering before entering the sanctuary focuses my mind and heart on where I’m entering and why. I also fell like it envelops me in a sort of "personal prayer space that is a very positive thing.
I don’t think that they should ever be required again; but I would love to see more women choosing to wear them for reasons that are valid and spiritually satisfying for them.
