What is your schedule for The Triduum?

Due to pastoral reasons, I kicked my tridium off already! I attended the Chrism mass at our cathedral this morning, then tonight we will have Evening prayer and a parish gumbo at my church. Tommorow, I will pray all parts of the Liturgy of the hours, then assist Fr. at mass. Friday is a day starting at 7 am in front of the tabernacle (no chapel in my parish) until 12 when we begin our Stations of the cross. Then at 3 pm is the passion service. after that, i will probably stay at church a little longer. Saturday is fasting until the vigil mass which I will be serving at and then BAM! easter sunday with mass in the mornign and family all day! horray!

oh and, setting up church decor every night for the next day! woo-hoo! (i’m on the arts and enviroment committe in our parish)

God bless all of you (like you SacredHeartfan) who help decorate the parishes before mass! I never thought about who helps with all of that. You’re a blessing to do that. Your excitement is contagious! I’m so grateful for our faith, I can’t imagine life without it. Without this blessed time of year. Have a happy easter!

That’s an impressive schedule! I have been noticing, a lot of early risers among us here. Have a happy easter, and welcome to CAF.

I’ll go to the 8:15 Mass Thursday morning for those who cannot attend the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. The rest of the day will be normal stuff. Then, early in the evening, I’ll sing the Maundy Thursday service at the Episcopal church and proceed afterward to choir rehearsal. When that finally ends, I’ll head over to the Cathedral for adoration until midnight. At midnight, they have night prayer, usually with a small men’s schola singing some Renaissance music. It’s wonderful until the priest takes the Blessed Sacrament out of the chapel and leaves us all alone. I never fail to break down crying at that. Then home to bed without Letterman.

Good Friday morning, I’ll sing Morning Prayer at my own parish. At noon, I’m going to the Episcopal church to hear one of the best preachers I’ve ever heard. Although female and non-Catholic, she’s still the best - each sermon is as beautifully composed as a symphony, and I’ve not heard her say anything objectionable - yet! Just my luck, she’ll turn into a radical nut Friday when DH is with me. Then we’ll go to the Passion service at 3:00 at our parish, which DH helps with. Then dinner, then Tenebrae at our parish, where I’ll be the cantor.

Holy Saturday I’ll spend baking and cooking for Easter. I’ll try to slip out and go to Confession around 11 in the morning. Then I’ll be the cantor for the Easter Vigil at our parish, and I’m singing the Exsultet! It will be a struggle to get through that without crying, too. I’ll have to indulge in a tearful rendition of it at home for myself, then concentrate on some musical technicalities while I sing it at church to stay composed. After the vigil, off to Baskin Robbins/Dunkin Donuts for a treat!

Easter morning, I sing two services at the Episcopal church, with a nice breakfast in between. Then pack up my goodies and take them to Easter dinner at our cousin’s house.

You don’t ‘have’ to fast on Holy Thursday or Saturday, but I plan to fast, now that I’m off of work, tomorrow–I am planning for a very silent, reverent day tomorrow, on Friday as well…and then Saturday, we are attending the vigil this year, instead of Sunday mass. In a weird way, I’m hoping for rain tomorrow and Friday…it just seems fitting for these somber days ahead. So, John–you can start your own tradition, by fasting tomorrow and Saturday, if you like. The Good Friday fast is mandatory for people between 18 and 59.

Can someone tell me what you do as far as fasting/work on Holy Week. I know you’d fast on Good Friday but how about Thursday and Saturday? Do you stay away from working/playing as you would on the Sabbath on any of these days? I’m a little fuzzy on that. Thanks

Its not required to do abstain from work/play on Thursday & Saturday. In fact, I don’t think it’s required on Friday either. The only requirement is abstinence from meat and fasting for adults. I try to put my mind in a more prayerful state during Holy Week, but its near impossible to avoid working, playing, etc. I have 3 kids, a dog, and a full time job on top of the music ministry. I just try to balance what I can, when I can.

Didn’t make it to Mass of the Lord’s Supper (it’s 10.30pm Holy Thursday here in Oz).

Spent some quality time with my rosary instead. I watched ‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’ while praying it. Never tried it before but it’s a lovely way to meditate on the Mysteries (with special emphasis on the Institution of the Eucharist of course :getholy: )

May do it again tomorrow! Roll on Good Friday - late breakfast at 10am so the tummy doesn’t rumble too loud, then stations at 11.30 and Liturgy of the Passion at 3pm.

***I was wondering something. The seven churches. I forget the significance of this…this took place in Pittsburgh, also…just can’t recall the meaning behind traveling to the seven churches. I always wanted to see what that was about, and just never did. You sould like you have a great schedule planned…have a blessed Easter. ***

If my memory serves me correctly, it goes back to something that was done in Italy. With all of the churches so close together, people would go from church to church to pray before the respective Altars of Repose. I have no idea why it is seven though. Benedictgal mentioned the other day that she was doing the same thing. I’m sure she’ll know a lot more about the “why” than me. I’ll check in with her and get back to you.

My favorite four days of the year.

We began Wednesday afternoon with a 2 1/2 hour ‘rehearsal’ with all the servers, MC’s, Deacon and Father. Got everything set up for Thursday.

Thursday I MC the Lord’s Supper at 6:30 PM.

Friday I MC the Passion of the Lord at 3:00 PM.

Saturday we meet with the Baptismal, Reception and Confirmation candidates at 12:00 to do a walk thru.

Saturday I MC the Easter Vigil at 8:00 PM - we are blessed that we have several candidates for the Sacraments this year to add to the celebration.

Sunday I MC a Solemn Mass at 9:30 AM.

We will be physically tired but spiritually fulfilled at the end of it all.

Tonight, I’m planning to attend the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at a Church nearby. I’ve never attended Mass on Holy Thursday (at least not that I can remember), so I really want the experience. Plus, they are having the Transfer of the Blessed Sacrament into the main Church for Adoration until Midnight, so I plan on staying awhile for that, if not all the time.

Tomorrow, on Good Friday, my mom will be home (her boss/brother gave her and the other employees the day off! ), so here’s my plan:

If we go to the Church down the street:
Morning Prayer (9am)
Living Stations of the Cross (3pm)
The Passion of Our Lord (7:30pm)

We may go to our regular Sunday Church, but it is much farther, so to save gas, I think it will be more feasible to go down the street. I like both Churches anyway.

I also plan to watch “The Passion of the Christ” sometime tomorrow. Most likely in between the Living Stations and The Passion Play.

Holy Saturday will consist of:

Morning Prayer/Blessing of the Food (9am)
Easter Vigil and Mass (8pm) (I don’t really remember the Easter Vigils that I went to as a kid, but my mom says they were long. I really want to go to another.)

Easter Sunday will consist of:

Holy Mass at 11:30am which I will be serving as an EMHC

My uncle is also having a party on Easter Sunday from what I hear, so that should be fun!

*I lived in PA for a while…but we moved to Florida in 07. Hard to believe it’s been nearly 2 yrs since that move! From the weather report I just saw, nope…no rain being called for. I just feel it’s fitting for the day. *

A lot of churches will distibute Holy Communion (consecrated at Holy Thursday Mass) at Good Friday liturgy. Seems to be standard practice in our diocese.

You’re right that none of them will have Mass on Holy Saturday before the Easter Vigil.

I attended our Chrism Mass on Tuesday.

Tonight I will be at Mass of the Lord’s Supper in my own parish. I was going to go to Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 10pm at the cathedral, but it’s not happening this year.

Tomorrow I will be at Mass of the Pre-Sanctified at noon at the local convent.

Saturday I will be at the Vigil at my own parish at 7.30.

Sunday I will be at High Mass in the morning at this parish. I hoped to go to Solemn Vespers & Benediction in the evening, either at the Oratorian parish or the local Western Rite Orthodox monastery, but my family is having dinner together.

Tomorrow I will attend Good Friday services at 3pm, I may go for the Divine Mercy Novena at 12 noon and return for the 3pm service. Sat. morning I will attend a holy hour with the RCIA candidates and catechumens (I am on the RCIA team), and then the Easter Vigil on Sat. nite. Sunday I am on call dayturn at the hospital, so will probably have to go to work part of the day Dinner will be at my friend’s house after work–don’t have any family in town this year.

Please pray for my husband. He has agreed to attend the Easter Vigil with me this year. He has not practiced his faith for years, I pray he will come back to Jesus. I don’t nag him about it, but I do feel like St. Monica must have felt while praying for St. Augustine. I told him (jokingly) that the church is fairly new, no need to worry about the roof collapsing when he walks in He said that had crossed his mind.

DD and I went to mass tonight, and it was wonderful. I really enjoy this new parish, I don’t think I’m going tomorrow though, I had planned to, but think I’m going to stay home and clean, pray, watch Passion of the Christ, and pray some more. Good Friday’s almost over here, but had one. Did some long-overdue cleaning this morning, but stopped at noon. Did some quiet praying and contemplatering until about 2 o’clock, then headed off to Good Friday liturgy. Beautiful singing (apart from the priest, who tried his best though, God bless’im).

They’ve reintroduced the custom that used to be called ‘creeping to the Cross’ - instead of a Holy-Communion style procession up to venerate the Cross, you group up in pairs and process in a very leisurely and orderly fashion, stopping three times on the way up the aisle to make a genuflection. Much more reverent, wish more churches did it.
