When I appeared in court it was as an expert. I wore a uniform. Projecting a highly professional (and expected) appearance in that context is a world away from meeting a bishop or the Pope where I am simply a member of the laity.

Do you wear that uniform daily? If you don’t, and it unlikely that you do, you are acknowledging basically dressing to the expectation of others in the context of seriousness of the setting. The key may be the “expected” and “Projecting” part. You wore it to project an image of respect and professionalism to others. Chances are that the Court would have let you testify dressed in street clothes, but you didn’t.

The way people who hire you in that role think of it is that we want you to appear professional and respectful, the same reason we wear coat and tie to court. Granted, that is party of the professionalism.

It would depend on context for me, but if I were to meet a Bishop, I might be wearing coat and tie. I definitely would be if I were meeting the Pope.

Granted, I woudn’t dress that way to Mass, but I can see why those who want to, in those areas, do. It basically acknowledges something being at least as serious as court. At the same time, at least here, there’s certainly no expectation for Catholics to dress in that fashion at Mass.

Precisely! When you realize, and more importantly, believe that not only the Lord, but His Blessed Mother, the Angels, and Saints are truly present with you at Holy Mass, then how in the world can you justify shorts, t-shirts, and flip flops? Unless you’re very poor and it’s all that you have, why is it so unreasonable to expect one to present him/herself modestly and respectfully in the presence of the King of Kings, his Queen Mother, and the Angels and Saints? It has been said that only one in three Catholics believe in the Real Presence…now it could be just me, but I can’t help but see the connection here.

You know, I’m honestly surprised at some of the responses. I’m really not looking to criticise what each person chooses to wear but do you honestly think God minds what you wear? Jesus calls the poor, the hungry, the homeless people to Him. He was criticised at one point for not washing.

Choose what you think is appropriate to wear but remember we must try to avoid looking down on those who are less well dressed or thinking others are wearing inappropriate clothing. Dressing up is not God’s way but man’s. As you all know, when the bible talks about washing your garments clean, it refers to your soul and confessing your sins, not your physical clothes.

Also, pease try to take my comment in the best light as I don’t want to be the one pointing at the splinter in my brother’s eye while having a plank in my own. I have enough sins to confess as it is.

Really, God knows what we look like in our “birthday suits”. God created us that way.
I think what we wear to Mass is more for the other people there than for God.
 
I always thought people behaved better if they were dressed up, a hold over from childhood when if they were running wild and tore a hole in their trousers or ripped the hem of their skirt they would catch “heck”. A lot of parents don’t seem to care enough to do that anymore.
 
My Sunday best is a modest dressy top with a long skirt (materials depending on the weather) or a dress that goes below the knees that covers shoulders & cleavage or a dressy top with dress pants ( the last one is more rare but may make appearances more when the weather turns really cold ) with a nice pair of dress shoes.

You’re right, there are still some holdouts - attorneys, politicians, television newscasters.

Realtors frequently. Sportscasters for coat and tie, quite frequently. Professional witnesses in court (as noted above).

Actually, coat and tie are more common that we might want to suppose in everyday wear. I wonder how many of us can go through an entire day without seeing somebody so dressed?
