What is your understanding of the 9 gifts of the spirit as in 1 cor 12?
Do you know people who are gifted this way?
These abilities, often termed "charismatic gifts ", are the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, increased faith, the gifts of healing, the gift of miracles, prophecy, the discernment of spirits, diverse kinds of tongues, interpretation of tongues

  • The word of wisdom.
  • The word of knowledge.
  • Faith.
  • Gifts of healing.
  • Workings of miracles.
  • Prophecy.
  • Discerning of spirits .
  • Different kinds of tongues
  • Interpretation of tongues
I believe we all have the potential to get those gifts.

There are some Catholic Charismatics groups that often talk about such things and actually I have felt they are instrumental in evangelizing people.

There are/were “Life in the Spirits” classes at some churches. There are/were healing ceremonies in some churches for people afflicted with illness where a priest would bless people and some would be “slain the Spirit” or would feel some healing by God.

That is my understanding, others may know more about this.

I do know people who have such gifts in fact, part of the reason I got more into my faith was I attended a group such as this a few times.

As a pentecostal, I believe that all of the gifts mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12 & 14 are still active. I’ve never seen any Biblical evidence that indicates that these gifts are not meant for today. At best, you could point to 1 Corinthians 13, which is a text that says that tongues will cease, but when that which is perfect comes, the gifts will cease. They say that “that which is perfect” means the compilation of the Bible, and since we have it, the gifts of the Spirit have ceased.

There’s nothing in the text that says that, though. There’s nothing there that indicates that it’s talking about the compilation of the Scriptures. We still see through a glass darkly, so “that which is perfect” has not yet come because we still know only in part and prophesy only in part. I believe that “that which is perfect” refers to the second coming of Christ. Indeed, we will no longer speak in tongues or prophesy when the Kingdom of Heaven comes, but until then, we should seek those spiritual gifts that Paul talks about in 1 Corinthians 12 & 14.

I believe that we should seek these gifts and operate based on what God gives us. I asked the Lord to give me all of those gifts, but He decided to only give me the gift of tongues. I pray in tongues because I find Biblical evidence that this is a spiritual language; a language that only God understands. What happens is that the Holy Spirit that flows through me communicates with God the Father. When I speak in tongues, I don’t choose what I say, I just say whatever the Holy Spirit puts on my heart. He gives me syllables and, with practice, they form into words.

If your parish has a charismatic renewal, you might contact them. They would be more than happy to explain the gifts and how they are to be used. Even how to discern them.

I don’t look at it dogmatically. When you look at the gifts and fruit of the spirit mentioned in multiple Pauline letters, they are not always listed the same. I think the greater point in this passage is that there should be unity and discipline within the Church out of love that we might be exhorted in our faith rather than for someone seeking recognition by exhibiting their gifts. These gifts are given to build up the body of Christ. However, I do not believe that these are necessarily an all-inclusive list of spiritual gifts for the purpose of working within the body of Christ.
