As a pentecostal, I believe that all of the gifts mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12 & 14 are still active. I’ve never seen any Biblical evidence that indicates that these gifts are not meant for today. At best, you could point to 1 Corinthians 13, which is a text that says that tongues will cease, but when that which is perfect comes, the gifts will cease. They say that “that which is perfect” means the compilation of the Bible, and since we have it, the gifts of the Spirit have ceased.
There’s nothing in the text that says that, though. There’s nothing there that indicates that it’s talking about the compilation of the Scriptures. We still see through a glass darkly, so “that which is perfect” has not yet come because we still know only in part and prophesy only in part. I believe that “that which is perfect” refers to the second coming of Christ. Indeed, we will no longer speak in tongues or prophesy when the Kingdom of Heaven comes, but until then, we should seek those spiritual gifts that Paul talks about in 1 Corinthians 12 & 14.
I believe that we should seek these gifts and operate based on what God gives us. I asked the Lord to give me all of those gifts, but He decided to only give me the gift of tongues. I pray in tongues because I find Biblical evidence that this is a spiritual language; a language that only God understands. What happens is that the Holy Spirit that flows through me communicates with God the Father. When I speak in tongues, I don’t choose what I say, I just say whatever the Holy Spirit puts on my heart. He gives me syllables and, with practice, they form into words.
