Additionally, I am wondering whether or not non-C’s are aware of Luther’s view of the relationship between reason and faith, or the Catholic view on the same.

From G. K. Chesterton’s “The Blue Cross”: “Only a man who knows nothing of motors talks of motoring without petrol; only a man who knows nothing of reason talks of reasoning without strong, undisputed first principles.”

Please take with with a spirit of Charity, but what is your purpose or motivation for asking?

So often I find the “so Protestants, tell us how screwed up you are” types of posts to be not only offensive, but on the verge of the sin of pride, as well as just uncharitable and demeaning. If that is your purpose I would invite you to conduct an examination of conscience around it and carefully consider the wording of future posts.

If it is for research or true understanding, please let us know (and accept my apology for presuming any less than virtuous intent). I think there are different ways to ask which are less presumptuous if otherwise.

Dear Non-Catholic-Christian Brethren in Christ

What is your understanding of the RIGHT Relationship between “Faith & Reason” in your church?

I actually watched the video, which makes the point that Aquinas teaches that Christians ought to accept truth from all sources, be they believers or not. There is a similar strand of thought in Mormonism. Brigham Young said:

“Mormonism,” so-called, embraces every principle pertaining to life and salvation, for time and eternity. No matter who has it. If the infidel has got truth it belongs to “Mormonism.” The truth and sound doctrine possessed by the sectarian world, and they have a great deal, all belong to this Church. As for their morality, many of them are, morally, just as good as we are. All that is good, lovely, and praiseworthy belongs to this Church and Kingdom. “Mormonism” includes all truth. There is no truth but what belongs to the Gospel. It is life, eternal life; it is bliss; it is the fulness of all things in the gods and in the eternities of the gods.

I hope this helps…

PS - Nice touch for the video to have a split second shot of a (probably contrived) Mormon missionary.

OK:)

As a Mormon how does you’re church define “TRUTH”?

D&C 93:24 And truth is knowledge of things as they are, and as they were, and as they are to come;

Just curious, how does the RCC define truth?

Hebrews 6:1-3, god willing we can move on to maturity. Otherwise. We stay infants. Laying again the basics.

Here are 3 separate but uniform understandings

[1] Dictionary Definition of “Truth”
  1. The true or actual state of a matter:
conformity with fact or reality; verity: the truth of a statement
  2. a verified or indisputable fact, proposition, principle, or the like mathematical truths.
  3. the state or character of being true.
  4. actuality or actual existence.
  5. an obvious or accepted fact; truism; platitude.
  6. honesty; integrity; truthfulness.
  7. (often initial capital letter) ideal or fundamental reality apart from and
    transcending perceived experience:
  8. agreement with a standard or original.
9… accuracy, as of position or adjustment.
  9. Archaic. Fidelity or constancy.
[2] Pope Benedict XVI
"There can’t be your truth and my truth or their would be no truth"

[3] Father John A. Hardon S.J. [a former mentor of mine and one of the most respected Theologians of the 20th Century]

“Truth” is the condition of grace; it is the source of grace; it is the channel of grace, it is the divinely ordained requirement of grace.”

God Bless you

That wisdom and reason are from God, and that a right worldview is impossible without faith in God. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,” and that.

OK, 🙂

So for the sake of provoking THOUGHT

THAT being the case in the light of the following facts; I have a question for you:

[1] FACT: Truth can be nothing other than singular per defined issue

[2] FACT: No church can be separated from its chosen set of “faith beliefs” as it is precisely their FAITH that identifies any church.

FACT; the large & ever increasing number of non-catholic-christian churches leads one to ponder the ROLE of Faith and Reason [if by “reason” we means applied LOGIC]

So here’s the question:

Based on FACTS #1 & #2

As Truth has to be singular per defined issue; How then [or Why then] are there more than just One True Church [with just One set of faith beliefs] as is clearly the desire of GOD, as articulated & taught in the Bible?

God Bless you,
Patrick
