I’ve seen a lot of clips from the show in Texas called “The Atheist Experience”. It’s kinda like Catholic Answers in a way, but debunks religion and God. Please tell me your views on it and I also ask if anyone knowledgable could possibly go and call them up one day?

I don’t really like the titles they use for their video clips. They’re rather rude and offensive titles.

Someone could call, I suppose, but these types are usually so smug and arrogant, that I doubt if it would make much difference. Better to let it die a natural death.

A boring waste of time, I’d rather watch Sponge Bob:popcorn:

Yeah I imagine you could have Aquinas-level knowledge and they would probably just yell over the top of you. Shows with a specific agenda aren’t going to let anyone interfere with that.

Not any different than a catholic show with a specific agenda allowing anyone to interfere with their story line.

In spite of what they say the vast majority of atheists who find their way to Christianity do not do so through philosophical reasoning. Rather, there are more than likely personal reasons which turn their attention to God. We do philosophy merely to show that the existence of God is indeed open to unaided reason, as the Church has always taught. But the Church realizes that few people can understand these reasons without the aid of God’s grace and without a good deal of intellectual effort. Indeed, this way to God would seem to be difficult to the vast majority and that is why we have Divine Revelation and the Church.

So there is really not much point in arguing with them when you get right down to it.

I am not sure that the host (sorry i don’t want to spell it wrong :D) is angry, arrogant or anything. He as a person lost the faith, as you know, and now works like a semi-fifth horseman. I have to say that the callers most of the time adress the issue the wrong way, either by having poor knowledge, either by wanting to knock the host down, with a rather poor agument (cf. the famous video "If God doesn’t exist, who wrote the BIble? with the revealing “think about it”), and so on. Matt is intelligent, he just didn’t find the Truth. Arrogance…I have seen pretention on both sides. And dialogue is almost impossible.

As for the titles, they are bad, but look at christian titles sometimes, they are not better: X destroyed by Y, the pig X rebuked…

We could follow these videos as a game, find the differences, find the truth, or just deepen our faith by seeing what others think, their arguments.

I’ve seen the show myself; needless to say, it’s a waste of time.

It’s a very good show.
One of the hosts, Matt Dillahunty, is especially knowledgeable about Christianity and the Christian canon–he was in seminary school on his way to become a Baptist minister.

And they don’t just yell over top of people.
The hosts are very eager to discuss all matters of Christianity, religion, God…and are very, very desirous to have people who have knowledge of religion call in and have a discussion/debate.
They’ve had a few Christian apologist-types on the show but the majority who call in don’t know much about their own religions and cannot discuss well. I am sure they would LOVE it if someone from here called in! PLEASE DO!
They are ACHING to debate with someone at “Aquinas level”.

The only time the hosts get heated sometimes–and it’s usually just Matt, who is a bit more demonstrative than the others–is when someone calls in and they refuse to listen and only talk over the hosts or they call in only to agitate them and not have a real discussion.
I don’t see many Catholics call in. Someone really should.
This show reaches a LOT of young people.
.
Perhaps we should get one of the Apologists to call in then 🙂

Those are not titles put on by people who work on the show.
Those titles on the youtube clips, if that is where you are looking, are put there by fans who post the clips.
On the TV show’s official site, the producers post the air date/show number with clips of the entire episodes.

.
My mistake. Even if it is their fans it is still not a charitable way.

“These types are so smug and arrogant”?

Have you seen the show?
Or are you just making mass generalizations about the personality and character of any non-theist?

.
I highly doubt he was generalizing. I’ve seen some of his work and he (the bald guy) seems very arrogant at first. However, I watched him debate this Eastern Orthodox guy and he (bald guy) finally started to settle down and started to use his mind. However, he would not let the other guy get a sufficient response toward the end of the video so he could not refute the claim properly (mostly by interupting him a good bit once he realized this guy was smart). Now, the reason why I would like a good apologist to please debate with this guy (even if it hopeless) is to simply show that Catholics do not drive people to Catholicism with “fallacies” as this one atheist I’m debating has stated. Heck, even showing that Catholics are not “crazy fundamentalists” would give a few “new atheists” a slap in the face and may rethink their view on Christians and even possibly Christianity as a whole.

EDIT: I would like to mention that at least the bald guy gave out the Eastern Orthodox guy’s youtube account so the bald guy’s fans could watch some them.

They cut off the phone callers too soon far too often.

I can understand why people think the hosts are obnoxious and rude.

Also I watched the clip where Matt Dillahunty(the main host of the show) inexplicably dressed up as a woman…
:sad_yes:…
It happened…

Hard to defend that.
