What Jehovahs Witnesses really believe

This thread is for a newer member that wished to discuss the beliefs held by Jehovahs Witnesses, so he/she could clear up any misconceptions as to what they believe. I thought this was a great idea. I wont be putting much into it. only to say, I do appreciate the J.W.s honesty in where they divert from Historical Christianity. Peace and prayers for all of us. J.W. and otherwise. Have a good and blessed discussion on this :)🍿 Im just gonna watch. Ok, I may put in my 2 cents worth of the name Jehovah, but thats it. Later 😉
 
Good thread. My aunt is a JW (converted from catholic) and is always pestering my dad to switch over…which he would never do. I would be interested to know what they believe (my aunt doesn’t speak english) so I get spared, lol! And possibly get some info to help my dad out when she confronts him about the scriptures and what they mean.
 
Just a few highlights of their beliefs:

Jesus is not divine (Therefore, no Holy Trinity)

There is no Hell

The soul is not immortal (except for the 144,000 annointed)

Only a literal 144,000 from earth will be in heaven

Jesus is Michael the Archangel

Jesus Christ’s Kingdom came invisibly in 1914

The ones that are not part of the 144,000 class will be on a paradise earth after Armageddon (the ones that are dead when this takes place will be resurrected)

The Holy Spirit is God’s inactive, impersonal force/power. It is not a person. (Again, no Trinity)

Their Governing Body is God’s mouthpiece and speaks for Him

Old doctrine that they once promulgated as truth is considered “old light” and is to be ignored and it then becomes replaced with new doctrine or “new light”. So truth that was once truth is no longer truth.

Much like the Mormons and Seventh Day Adventists, they believe the Church (they don’t like using that word) apostatized soon after the apostles died.
 
I understand that they believe only 144,000 will be in heaven. but are you stating that the J.W.s teach that the 144,000 do not experience the “soul sleep” experience, but go directly to heaven? If this is true, then I have learned something new already. It was my impression that all died, and slept until the resurrection. This is most interesting. Thank you. Peace 🙂

What happened to the Millions Now Living Will Never Die creed? From what I was told (by jws, of course) those who were aware (the age of 9 years was given) of the events of 1914 would still be living when *The End Of This System Of Things *came about. By those calculations, the youngest would be 106 years old this year. If there are millions of living centenarians, someone needs to alert the Associated Press.
This belief was still being touted in 1985.
What happened?

Benedict, this is the only way they can get around the Eucharist (they do not and will not refer to it as such) and the teachings that Christ gave in regards to it. Since they think the only ones who have a right to eat the bread (His flesh, but only symbolically) and drink the wine (His blood, but only symbolically) are a literal 144,000 number that only exists within their ranks, they don’t have another way to explain what Christ meant when He said that those who eat and drink have everlasting/eternal life.

Catsrus, see my “Old light/New Light” bullet point above. It’s a very recent and confusing new definition of what a “generation” means that most the JW’s themselves cannot explain when pressed. I can give the outline of how they arrived at this new doctrine if you’d like.

No,not at all my friend. I am simply expressing my feelings about JW’s beliefs. Very unorthodox.

Gotcha. Sorry, the joys of sometimes communicating on the internet I guess. Yes, they are very unorthodox. One can hardly find anything resembling JW teachings amongst the early christians until Arius came along. And the JW’s point to him as being somehow connected to them.:rolleyes:

How about the doctrine or practice of not celebrating birthdays, Christmas and other holidays? Where did this come from and basis (Biblical)?

And how is this refuted (from the Bible)?

Was this an answer to the false prophecy,of the Millerites, to which the JW and SDA churches base their foundation?

Not sure how “divine” is being defined. However, JW belief includes that Jesus Christ was and is the Son of God, was on earth in human form, was crucified,really died, and was resurrected. Jesus Christ is a VERY important part of the JW faith.

Dokimas, the JW’s teach that Jesus was Michael the Archangel and therefore a created being. In order for them to deny that Christ is God incarnate, they had to show John 1:1 to read that He was “a god”. They will say that He was “god like” because of the power He had, but not part of the Holy Trinity.

They teach that the non-144,000 JW’s now living, as well as everyone who is dead, but killed at Armageddon will be given a chance to become a JW after being preached to by JW’s on a restored paradise earth. Since they teach that all the christians who partook of the bread (Eucharist) , including the apostles, were part of this literal 144,000 number and are already in heaven. Since they claim a small portion of their ranks are part of this literal 144,000 class, they too will be there ruling with them.

There is a difference, Dokimas, when the JW’s claim they are God’s mouthpiece.The JW’s have made prophetic predictions that have all failed, all the while claiming that they were God’s sole channel of communication. I submit to you that the Catholic Church has made no prophetic predictions.
