My friend is seriously dating a girl, however he kissed another woman who is not his girlfriend and he is catholic. I’ve talked to him and he is sincerely sorry yet will not tell his girlfriend.

What kind of sin is that (kissing another woman)?

Was it a ‘peck’ kind of kiss? Then probably not a ‘sin’.

Was it passionate making out? Then could be a ‘sin’ of lust, though probably not a mortal sin.

I confess to almighty God
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have greatly sinned,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
through my fault, through my fault,
through my most grievous fault;
therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,
all the Angels and Saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Ten commandment probably #8 (bearing false witness) & #9 (coveting neighbors wife)

Kissing is not a sin, sex with someone who is not your spouse is a mortal sin. If your friend is kissing someone who is not his girlfriend that is not sin, but could be a sign that his relationship with his girlfriend is in trouble, and only your friend can decide about that.

In that situation, I would consider the real problem a breach of trust. It might not be a sin to go on dates with different people at different times and kiss both of them (though I personally wouldn’t recommend it), but if the man and his girlfriend are discerning marriage, then they have to be able to trust each other not to go behind each other’s backs like this.

I’m not sure what the formal name for that sin would be, but that’s what I would think is the root of the problem. It’s not the kiss itself, so much as the fact that he did something his girlfriend trusted him not to do, and then hid it from her.

The sin is infidelity, not the actual kissing itself. Chaste kissing is permissible outside of marriage, but being committed to one woman and kissing another is being disloyal to his girlfriend. All relationships must be built on honesty. If he will not be honest with his girlfriend in a seemingly small matter like this, he will not be honest in larger situations. If he has good character and his girlfriend loves him, he should not be afraid to tell her and she should be gracious enough to forgive him. If the two were married, kissing another woman would be a more serious sin. But by dating this girl, he has expressed his commitment to her for the time being even if their relationship does not end in marriage. I think that makes it a venial sin. Circumstances might change it further (i.e. was he drinking? Did he kiss her or she kiss him? Was it passionate or gropey? Did he try to avoid being alone with another woman he’s attracted to? etc.)
