What kind of car should I get?

I’m in the market for a new car. This is what I want:
  • Smaller car. I currently have a Ford Taurus, which is a tad big.
  • Something cool. Still want to impress the ladies a bit. Please no snide comments.
  • Good gas mileage. Not sure about hybrid, though.
  • Reasonably priced. Don’t want to break the bank.
Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!
 
Scion makes a good car. The gas mileage is great, they are not huge vehicles, and it’s definitely got a sporty look to it.

Ladies don’t care that much… or do they? haha. I’d go for a nice used car that gets good gas mileage after it has been inspected of course. Yarus?

I liked my Cobalt, the only problem I had with it was the speakers. My mom’s is the same way. The coupe kind of has that sporty look (I had the coupe, my mom has the sedan).

I just got a Mustang that I really like. Might be too big though if you think the Taurus is too big (I used to have a Taurus too). Looks cool though! (imho)
 
The 2014 Ford Fiesta is supposed to be available in a 3-cylinder engine. I don’t know what it will cost, but it will hopefully have about the best mileage you can get for a non-hybrid gas engine in a new car.
 
The most reliable one that you like the look of!
Remember you might still have it years from now if you really like it!

And to help our planet, maybe a hybrid? Like a Prius or something?

We HATED our hybrid. The gas mileage was a joke and we had to dump it at 98,000 miles because the battery conked out and Honda wanted a mere $10,000 to replace it. Our Jetta is much better.

Something smaller – because that apparently is what you want.

Something with four doors, because it’s a pain in the zadnitsa for back-seat passengers to climb in and out of a two-door.

Something economical/environmentally friendly.

Something with proven reliability.

Something that can be fixed at a dealership close to you, if it does break (the plant where I am security chief is owned by Toyota, so all the company vehicles are Toyotas, and they have to take them 40 miles to the closest dealership just to get the oil changed).

Something that 10 years from now you’ll be able to look at it and say, “I’m really glad I bought that car.”

I was looking at the Cobalt, too, a few years back. Glad to hear that you’re liking it. I also like the sporty look.

Are we talking NEW new car, or used “new” car? It makes a difference.

And as far as cool, you could look at mod-able cars (used Honda Fit, for example).

Hybrids don’t usually impress the ladies, unless they are environmentalist-types. If that’s your type, go for it.
 
What’s your budget? I know you said affordable, but it’s hard to know exactly what you mean by that.

I’d say an E36 BMW, possibly an M3 if you can find one in your price range. Reliable, fun, practical, and fuel efficient. Don’t bother with an autotragic transmission; manual is the only way to go. Lots of them are out there for under $10K. I got my 325i for $2500 and it’s been great.

I wasn’t referring to any specific make or model; I was listing a series of categories that you could use to focus your research.

We own an '07 Ford Focus station wagon and an '08 Chevy 4-door Colorado pickup, and we are very happy with both of them. However, there are plenty of other good vehicles out there.
 
I’m leaning towards a new car. As for budget, I’m thinking under $20k. I still need to check out what kind of corporate discounts I get through my employer, which may dictate what kind of car I get.

I’ve heard Ford Focus mentioned a few times by posters. May check it out.

2007 was a good model year for the Focus; I have no idea what they’re like now. I do know that in '08 they stopped making the station wagon (a deal-breaker for us), and the instrument layout was absolutely hideous.

The smaller Chevys have been getting pretty good reviews, as have small cars by Hyundai and Kia (if and only if there’s a dealership in your area).

Under 20K isn’t going to get you a lot…A new Honda Fit might be a good choice, although they aren’t too sexy (they look like a hamster to me). They get good gas mileage, they are huge inside, and quite fun to drive. I think the new ones are nearly as mod-able as the older ones. Honda sure had some fun ads for them.

I would look at Scion too. Although if you’re over 35, it might be seen as a little pathetic. 😉

I’m no fan of American cars overall.
