What Kind Of Church Is This?

I’m talking about regular cloth or leather padded individual chairs, instead of wooden pews.

Ok, I think those are the same kind of chairs we sat on in CR.

I’m starting to see that, too, but Cajun Joy, what did you mean by “lately, yes some confusion?” Are you talking about the priest scandal? Because that factored into my thoughts about leaving Catholicism, too.

Yes, Catholics are allowed to believe in evolution. The Encyclical Humani Generis, in about number 36 or 37 explains better than I can here. I will look up the Encyclical and give you the link. There is good reason for the explanation in that Encyclical.

I know a few people (less than 5, so not a scientific sample) who graduated from Johnson Bible College. They all know the bible well, but the theologies they each preach are all over the map. One highly respects Catholicism and the pope, even if he will never become Catholic. He’s also very liberal politically and specifically preaches to the LBGTQ community. One is the complete opposite and started a weird church that seems to encourage its members to bring guns to services and says the pope is satan. The other two seem to be fairly standard run of the mill Southern Baptist-ish preachers. The college seems to give them a good foundation from which to start and they are all very biblically literate, even if we disagree on interpretation.

I’ve already read it but thanks anyway. I just wanted to make sure.

How are they heretical but regular denominational Protestant churches aren’t?

Hope 1960,

Many are NOT leaving the Catholic Church because of Our Lord’s promise to be with us always, and the “gates of hell will not prevail against the Church”…and the the giving of the keys to the apostle Peter.

There has always been sin in members of the Church, and we also have holy priests and saints. Members of the Catholic Church have to pick up their cross and follow Jesus. We need members who will allow themselves to be sanctified by our Lord Jesus Christ using all the means he gave us…Sacraments, Prayer, Eucharist at Mass - which is the Body,Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ - our Risen Lord!!!

Catholics need to pray for the fallen members, not run away from the Church.

So, after these people graduate from Johnson Bible College, they can just go and start their own churches?

Are non-denominational churches created that way? By just some person or people who started their own church, sort of like they just made it up?

In my experience, yes. I know several people who have started these types of churches. They’ve also spent time in mainstream protestant churches. Personally I think it’s a control issue…these types of people like to be in charge and not have to answer to a lot of people (if any).

But aren’t there a lot of Catholics who are leaving? I do have some consolation that while I don’t wish this on anybody, it’s good to know that this isn’t just a Catholic problem.

The people I know started at larger churches as some sort of associate pastor - either an assistant, or maybe youth pastor. Then once they got some experience, they would go out on their own. Two of them started their churches by renting rooms in a convention center or hotel meeting room, no joke. To get congregants, they would rely on friends, family, word of mouth, social media, fliers in grocery stores or telephone polls…

Established chruches will interview potential pastors, maybe have them give a trial sermon, then have the elders or board of directors vote on a contract for the pastor they want to hire.

Seems weird to us, I know. Keep in mind, though, that all religions are weird when viewed from the outside 🙂

Well, that’s another strike against this church. I’m trying to find out just how this church began. It just appeared several years ago in our community, but under a different name. Then they changed the name but I don’t think they changed anything else about it.

Yep, I see that a lot where I live. These churches meet in office buildings or rent space from another church.

Name changing is common also! They don’t really have a set creed so they just kind of make up their mission as they go along. I know they mean well and are searching for the truth but they don’t want to submit to any higher authority other than their own interpretation of the Bible. (At least that’s been my experience dealing with the people I know who were involved in these churches.)

In the next suburb over there was some church that started (and closed) in like a strip mall or something, next to a car repair shop.

oh I believe it…some of the churches around here eventually evolved in to large megachurches. However they weren’t really non-denom by that time…most of the megas are either Baptist or Missionary. I think several non denom churches band together and make (or join) a new church with lots of different options and services.

There are always Catholics leaving, and there are converts coming into the Catholic Church as well.

You are correct that scandals aren’t only a Catholic problem…scandals are in families, public schools, and in churches.
