What kind of dancing does the Church say is good?

I learned to tango the other day. When a man tangos he puts his hand on a girl’s side. Is this appropriate to do with a person you aren’t married to?

While the Catechism doesn’t teach anything specifically about dancing (just checked lol), I think the general rule to follow would be to examine whether your dance is causing you occasion to sin. If it isn’t, then keep on dancing :).

In my experience in high school (a few years ago), 99% of dancing was “grinding.” Absolutely do not participate in that filthy act. There’s a lot of this at clubs/bars/etc. as well.

Dance, dance with joy.

Hate to be the killjoy… and I’m all for dancing; but I must say that if you saw an average high school dance these days, I am quite sure you wouldn’t think it a trivial issue. It’s revolting. A used condom was found on the gym floor after one of the dances at the high school I went to.

Satan corrupts the good things -

Wine is a good thing, because somepeople are drunks should we prohibit wine?

Food is a good thing - because some are gluttons (you should see the kind of eating that I see at the average all-you-can-eat buffett) should we stop enjoying good food?

Sex is a good thing, because some people have sex outside of marriage or other peverse sexual acts, You see where I am going?

This OP is asking about the Tango. If your high school pals are doing the tango, they are very decicated to the art of dance.

We do not have to throw out the good things, the joyful things in this world just because some pervert them for sinful purposes.

If my arthritis was not so bad, I’d still be dancing every weekend (yes, at a bar with a band and some rockin music).

I know, I said I’m all for dancing! I am just warning him against the day’s most common form of it. I wish it were tango.

But I definitely should have clarified… tango is fine!! 🙂

A friend once asked me to take salsa dancing lessons with them. My immediate instinct was to say “no thanks”. It is a very sensual dance - even for married couples. It is my opinion that if it is done, it is not really suitable for public display.

That pretty much sums it up you guys.

Hmm…What about causing scandal, or causing someone else occasion to sin?

Last I read, causing scandal could in itself be a sin, so that’s covered …
Yes, that’s what I was getting at. I was just trying to point out that it’s not only about those who are dancing - while at the same time, I’m not wanting to get into a big discussion about how people dress/act and how the “viewer” is also responsible…

Fifty-four years ago, an IHM nun (They were all pretty traditional then.) taught our whole senior high school class to dance the Tango and the Viennese Walz. We put on an exhibition for our parents and the underclass kids. Those dances are not performed with a lot of lower body contact and are beautiful to watch.

We used to have a lot of dances using records (sort of a precurser to the CD) in the school gym. The sisters and the assistant pastor were chaperons and while one put ones hands on shoulder or waist, they insisted on a hands width distance between our bodies. We danced the tango, the walz, polkas, two-step, and the Lindy hop. There were some kids who could do the Charleston, a dance famous in the “roaring twenties.” Lots of good clean fun.
