We’re a rodent family.
Before the kids there were the guinea pigs – unfortunately I’m seriously allergic and Dad ended up with them. Getting them home was an adventure: picture two adults and three guinea pigs in a 1975 Austin Mini in December travelling home to New Brunswick from Toronto. Hiding guinea pigs in your jacket to go into restaurants because leaving them in a cold car was just not right. Picture trying to breathe.
Cats came next and a dog or two. By the time DD came along we only had the cats but a move to wheat country a few years later made cats impossible to have, I’m allergic to both cats and wheat dust. One or the other I could live with but both, nooooooo!
Next posting was to PEI and I went out for coffee one morning and returned with Arnold, a hooded rat. Now, I’d had rats as a teenager and knew what great pets they were but the other 4 went EEWWWW, A RAT!! “He’s mine,” says I. “You don’t even have to look at him, if you don’t want to.” He wrapped them around his little hand in no time and whenever we lost him in the evening we could usually find him curled up between DD’s cheek and her 'Wrinkles".
We’ve had 15 since Arnold, of all colours and temperaments. All with different personalities but I must admit, none as fun as Arnold, who would plunk himself down in the middle of my newspaper if I was sprawled on the floor reading. He would come and steal popcorn right out of the bowl if the kids were sitting on the floor watching TV. (Yes, we did have furniture.

) He’d jump and curl up in the crook of DH’s arm when he was snoozing on the couch.
We’re ratless now because the kids are all gone and we like to take off on the spur of the moment. Funny how hard it is to get someone to rat-sit.
