What kind of "Family" are you?

I would be a dog person, but I am just not ready to add that to my human mix! Currently, we are just worm people, My DD asked for a pet worm when she was 3, so her 4th birthday we started worm farming! 5 years later, they are still eating our leftovers! No vet bills, no pet food! We tried rabbits, fish and frogs, but I decided it was not very humane, they just die.
So we are other people, just worms until the kids convince me to try frogs again…it is almost time for us to catch tadpoles!

I’m a zoo person. I like cats for being cats and dogs for being dogs. I often wonder how cat-only parents deal with “pack children” and dog-only parents deal with independent children.

Right now we have a dog and box turtle. But if my son wasn’t so allergic to cats I’d have one of two of them also. Actually my plan has always been to have a black boy kitty named Spooky (Yeah, yeah, you don’t like Mulder.) and a red tabby girl named Starbuck. (My sister has a kitty named Scully.) In the past we’ve had Betas, goldfish, and hermit crabs. When I was growing up we often had parakeets.
 
We currently have a dog and a cat. We have had hamsters and fish in the past. I tend to like kitties more than dogs, but our pug is a sweetie and actually listens to me (most of the time) whereas the cat looks at me disdainfully if I request she move her furry bottom. The dog and cat love each other as well–but it’s a strange kind of love full of chasing, biting and the occasional full body attack. But then they snuggle down or lick each other–very cute.
 
We used to be fish people, but the Beta fish died. 😦

He (or she?) was actually quite entertaining. If we put a mirror to the bowl, he would puff up and charge the mirror. I think he would see me coming when it was feeding time, because he would get more lively.

In the future, I would like to get perhaps a dog (when DS1 is old enough to walk it and pooper scoop it). I like English bulldogs, but I’m somewhat worried I’ll end up needing an appointment with the dog Whisperer. :o
 
Definitely cat people. We have always had cats. I developed a severe cat allergy early in our marriage, and we had to find homes for our indoor cats, but now we live in an area where it is legal to have outdoor cats, and our cats live outdoors/indoors. We have a heated brick barn where they can go to sleep and be safe from predators. 😃 We brought one female cat with us to this home, and then adopted another cat (male) from a neighbor who was moving and couldn’t keep him. They aren’t related, but they look related, both the same color and markings.

I adore cats. Always have. I find them beautiful and playful, and they’re useful! If you have a cat that catches mice, it’s earning its keep by keeping the rodent population down. I wish our male cat wouldn’t go after birds, but it’s his nature.

Our cats are very loyal and loving. I never understand it when people say they hate cats because they’re not loyal like dogs. Our cats will snuggle right up to us, sit on our laps when we’re out in the barn, and follow us when we go on walks. They both come when we call (well, the female prefers me and won’t come when DH calls her, but other than that).

My husband detests dogs. He hates the barking, the messes they make and how their bites can injure children. He doesn’t trust most dogs around our kids. I will say that our neighbors mostly all have dogs and they are very good dog owners. I can tolerate dogs, but would probably never own one. Cats are the way to go. 🙂

We do have fish, but those aren’t pets to me. DS wanted some, so we got some goldfish.
 
Oh, we are definitely dog people. :yup: We have 2 dachshunds. 🙂
 
Zoo people here, dogs, cats, lizards, hermit crabs, fish, birds, rodents, ferrets, hissing cockroaches, giant african millipedes, heck, we even took in a stray child or two.

We love them all.
 
I’d have to say that we are dog people. We have had dogs almost since we got married. We tried fish and, though they survived being dumped out and sucked through the ventilator tubes several times, it was better for them to live somewhere else.

Here’s our current pup, a tricolor Collie from the Humane Society.

She makes it look like we are bear people, too, but I think they are pretty much extinct around here, now.

Now if we ever get to move into the countryside, I’d love to have a few chickens and maybe a horse or cow or barn cats.
 
We are dog people, mostly b/c I am allergic to cats so I chose not to like them at a young age. There was no point in wanting something that would make me sick.
 
We are zoo people. Here is the current tally:

Three dogs: a German Shepherd with the sole of a beleagured teenage girl; a rescued greyhound who is so snarky we call him “Mr. Kitty”, and a Boxer pup who’s either the dumbest or smartest dog alive (she ran out the back gate the other day, then decided she wanted to come home - so she knocked on someone’s door!).

We are very upset that local ordinances do not allow chickens. We tried every way we could think of to figure out how to do it … but no chickens for us.

One day, we want a farm. I grew up riding horses, and I think they’re great for kids to take care of. We’ll probably have a cow, even though I’m not a huge cow fan, and certainly free-range happy pigs (theoretically for bacon … which we will of course swear to never eat again, and the pigs will live to old age). DH wants a rhea. We’re also trying to get licensed to help rehab wild animals. So certainly, at some point, we’ll have them too (to help them get released in the wild, of course!). And we want to take up falconry in our old age. No cats - DH is allergic.

Did I mention we’re in the process of becoming foster/adoptive parents? We really like a full house!
 
Cat people. We’ve had seven since we’ve been married, not all at the same time of course. The most we’ve had a one time is four. Right now we have two.

We also like rodents. We’ve had hamsters and gerbils. Right now we have a hamster, our third since our daughter first wanted them. Before the hamsters we had a pair of gerbils. I like rodents, the down side is they don’t live terribly long and my daughter’s heart just breaks whenever they pass.
 
My family is definitely a zoo kind of crowd. I’m living on my own so I don’t have any pets, but growing up my family has had:

8 cats
5 dogs
6 horses
2 horse babies that were sold pretty quickly
1 rabbit
numerous fish

They’re not all with us still but they were all definitely a part of the family.
 
Well, we’re a dog family.

We have a female Newfoundland and she is WILD. She’s a year old now and 115 lbs. Her favorite thing to do is jump across my pool cover…and even sit on it looking at me as I tell her to “get off”!!! Her name is “Angel” and I’m hoping she will eventually live up to it.
 
At one time my husband & I have had 2 ferrets, 2 dogs, 1 horse, and 2 cats - all in the house, except the horse (although he’d come in if we let him). We’re definitely zoo people!

When I used to get those awful monthly cramps I would take 2 Motrin, lie on the couch, and place my purring kitty on my abdomen. The heat from the cat and the vibration from the purring made me feel so much better. See, cats can serve us (but don’t tell them that).🙂
 
DH and I are cat people. We have a kitty we love very much. Unfortunately our baby is more of an ‘attack the kitty’ person so our kitty wants to hide all day and snoogle and play all night!

DH wants a dog someday but I’m not a dog person at all!
