I’m not entirely sure what “Praise & Worship” style is, I suspect I might like some of it. I don’t like the Vox Dei songs (songs written in God’s words but sung by the congregation) or folk songs with LOOOOONNG-held notes that no one can reach. Generally not a fan of the folk songs as a whole, although they certainly seem here to stay.
Amy Welborn has reffered to this genre of church music as “Aren’t We Fabulous”

Have any of you seen this? Anyone signed up? The parody lyrics are a scream.

I’m a fan of the more traditional music. Since I don’t listen to that anywhere but church, it helps put me in the right mindset for Mass.

I seem to have grown up in the era of the folk group and happy clappy music. I have grown away from it much to the preference of no music or gregorian chant or traditional hymns.

Gregorian chant sounds great, but I have never heard it “live” in church… only on a CD.

I don’t think any of the churches in my diocese have any masses with Gregorian chant. There are some churches that play a CD as people go to confession, though…

During most Masses, I like traditional Catholic hymns… However, during things like SCRC or NCFC, it is nice to have more contemporary hymns, as long as respect is still being shown. Finally, I love the Latin Mass, and the chants are very dear to my heart as well. They are peaceful and very contemplative, and remind the congregation that the Church has survived a long time and is truely a beautiful institution. It also keeps focus from the different words, per say, to the actual actions taking place on the altar; which is a lot more important anyway!

I PREFER NO MUSIC AT MASS. ( Did they have music at the crucifixion?) It is the sacrifice of the Mass, you know.

IF YOU HAVE TO PUSH IT , THEN THE GREGORIAN CHANT IS ALLOWABLE.

IF I WANT MUSIC , I WILL TURN ON THE RADIO.

I’m glad you’re not in charge. God seems to disagree with your sentiments.

"Oh come, let us sing to the LORD;
**let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! **
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us make a joyful noise
to him with songs of praise!"
Psalms 95:1-2

See also Psalms 66, 81, 98, and 100.

Clearly, we should come into his presence (at the mass! Not just in a separate praise and worship meeting, in his presence!!) while **singing songs of praise to our Lord!!! **Yep, I think I’ll take the Word of God on this one.

Mike, tell me why we had Mass for 1900 years without the people singing at Mass. Tell me why , just 30 years ago the people didn’t sing? Tell me why that just recently Church Funds have been used to PAY musicians. We didn’t sing fromm the year 33 to the year 1975. Why are we having to endure singing now? What happened? We had small choirs 30 years ago who would sing 2 or 3 songs at Mass - but now it sounds like a Protestant Sing-a-long. Was this done to be more Protestant? Why did the US Bishops change their tune? I go to Mass to hear the Priest, not some silly songs.

Gregorian Chant. I wish there was a church in my area that did at least 1 mass using Gregorian Chant.

Why wasn’t Polyphony included in the list? Or some of the beautiful Classical Masses - such as Mozart, Schumann etc

There are also some beautiful motets, some written quite recently by Tavener, Gorecki, Rutter etc

So much beautiful choral music available - hardly anyone makes use of it! I remember learning about Gregorian Chant in high school (public). The other students in the class (I was the only Catholic) asked me if we still had it and why didn’t we still use it? Why didn’t we still have Mass in Latin? All these teenage non-catholics couldn’t understand why the church didn’t use this most beautiful music and language. Does that tell us something???

:hmmm:

If you need music at Mass, then you have had an arrested level of maturation. You are still a kid mentally, emotionally.

I prefer no music, I want to hear the Priest.

I would say that the answer to Exporter would be that the Church Magesterium said so. Period. Why is everyone so stuck on that the past is the only option? I will follow Church teaching only if it is something I am comfortable with? What happens to the Holy Spirit?

JP II loved music and included it in many vibrant, solemn, and completely litugically correct forms.

Also, if as you claim, there was never any music until 30 yrs ago, then there is no such thing as “traditional” anything regarding music.

As far as I know, God has not passed along to us that any particular musical intruments are endorsed or condemned. I will just have to trust that the Holy Spirit will guide my Bishop to teach us how best to make the celebration of the Eucharist a fitting expression of worship.

I am a musician/cantor. We try very hard at my parish to see that the music selections match the readings, liturgical seasons, etc. The music is a form of prayer. The songs and acclamations do seem “angelic” as someone else posted, when the whole congregation actively participates. As long as the selections come from accepted, liturgically correct and approved sources then it comes down to a matter of preference as to styles. I personally like all kinds of music, and I also like more quiet masses. The GIRM makes it pretty clear what is expected. Our Bishop had training sessions for musicians and all other liturgical ministers to help us. If we get off track, we’ll probably be guided back into line. We don’t have to worry about being more Catholic than the Pope.

Music, music, music… I love beautiful music with rich harmony, the organ and piano guitar, violin, flute…Probably the thing I am not crazy about are drums and electric guitar… that is distracting to me. I grew up in the choir, my mom was the Choir director and my dad was in the choir so that meant as kids we were too.

My favorite was the Old Glory and Praise. Be Not Afraid, Eagles Wings, Abba Father…I know them by heart.

Last year we sang the Alleluia Chorus and it was so beautiful. The priest sings the mass and has such a wonderful voice it can bring a tear to your eyes.

I recently moved across town so I am no longer in the same parish and my new parish is not as moved with music, so I am not in the Choir, but I still love to sing and no matter what the music is if it is a good parish I am happy.

We are supposed to be PARTICIPATING in the Sacrifice of the Mass. We are offering ourselves too. Not just listening to the priest. We are expected to “Lift up our hearts”, as we are made present at Calvary, and we are singing with “all the choirs of angels…in their unending hymn of praise”

Gosh, did a singer beat you up when you were a kid?

DITTO. I play the violin, guitar and piano and I love all kinds of music. I agree that electric guitar gets a little distracting, don’t like it much. We have a percussionist that wants to participate, and I keep my mouth shut, because I know he wants to add to the liturgy, but it does make your attention go to the musicians and not the altar.

That’s the biggest challenge, keep the congregation participating and not just watching a performance. Maybe big, lavish groups need to be in like a choir loft, where you can hear the rich music, but not see the group so much.

To hear the Priest in my parish you must listen to song and chant the Priest sings the mass from my last parish and this one sings. In fact our 83 year old Priest loves to sing, I don’t think he picked that up in the last 30 years either. Why are your comments so hostile about singing? There is an anger and a sadness around your posts, I am sorry music would ruin your spiritual experience with God.

That is so wonderful you have a wonderful gift and blessing. I can minimally play the piano and would love to play the violin, so I stick to the singing. When they rebuilt my parents parish they put the choir in the back, I find that is the most appropriate place for them. However, my niece and nephew are 2 and 3 and do so much better in mass when they sit near the Choir, they even sing along.
