Simple, it signifies chief dedication to God’s work rather than earthly pleasures. It is not to say that earthly pleasures are bad, but giving them up is a great sacrifice and allows you to devote full time to God rather than divided between God and family obligations.

The Bible is very clear on this, see Mat 19:10-12 and especially 1 Cor 7.

Also, it would potentially cause scandal for people to go around claiming biological parenthood from Christ.

Ditto. And that Dan Brown’s books are fanciful.
