What Makes a Good Parent?

There was a short column in my youngest son’s take-home school paper about what makes a good parent. Obviously, this was written from a secular perspective. However, it got me thinking about the Catholic perspective of what makes a good parent.

What a good question…

I think a Good Parent is someone who is able to provide the perfect environment for a child to grow into exactly what God wants that child to be.

That is a great question and one that can have many answers in my opinion.

These are my takes on it. I have three daughters and am constantly striving every second of everyday to be a good parent. I was a pregnant teen. I thought about abortion yet chose life and I have worked hard everyday trying to figure out what being a good parent really and truly meant. These are a few of my opinions…

A good parent is one who:

1. Shows their children Jesus everyday in all aspects of life from brushing teeth and how blessed we are to have healthy teeth… to helping those around us in need… to trusting God in times of sadness. This I have seen is easier learned when witnessed first hand instead of just being told. My own father taught me this imp. lesson.
2. Is unselfish and puts their childrens needs above their own
3. patient…
4. a rule follower themselves
5. One who shows love… and forgiveness
6. One who disciplines even though it would be easier to let them have their way sometimes. (At 18-19 yrs old this was really tough for me and I faltered more than I would have liked to with my oldest)
7. A good parent looks at their children as gifts not burdens
8. A good parent will teach a child respect by respecting their children as little people
