What makes a person a "Christian"?

I was reading the Catholic Survival Guide Book put out by Catholic Answers and also while listening to an episode of the Journey Home where Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon Church) respectivly and I noticed that both refered to the churches being discused a couple of times as none Christian. This has me confused. I thought both of these churches claimed to be christian (Granted they are a bit odd but so are quite a few other churches everyone agrees is christian). Could you please explain this to me? Thanks and God bless.
