What’s the catholic teaching on beauty itself and what makes a person beautiful? Is it truly subjective or is there objective criteria

that’s nice but idk if that’s true. I know a lot of good hearted people who love the Lord and others but because they are unattractive they are single.

Beauty is of God. It’s not just skin deep.

Beauty radiates outwards from the soul. The true sign of a beautiful person is the fact that their beauty INCREASES as you get to know them better.

Regardless of what they look like on the outside.

I’ve known several women (when I single) who I was not physically attracted to at first, but as I got to know them, their beauty increased (due to their inner beauty) and I started to fall in love with them.

On the flip side, I’ve know several women who I was very physically attracted to at first and as I got to know them, their beauty diminished due to the ugliness of their soul.

To me, that’s what defines a beautiful person - and I would assume that any Church clergyman or theologian would have a similar definition, because true beauty is of God.

God Bless

There’s this whole theology on beauty that I have no knowledge of so I can’t answer the first question.

As for your second question, it really depends what you mean by beautiful. There’s both physical beauty and inner beauty. For physical, research suggests that there are both objective and subjective standards of beauty.

As for the ‘inner’ beauty, I find that intelligence and kindness has affected how I view certain men. That being said though, in order for these inner qualities to increase one’s attractiveness, I had to find these men ‘average’ in looks first.

The PC answer is to disregard the physical and say that everyone can be beautiful, etc. But I find it very hard to believe someone who says that the don’t care about the physical at all. An ‘ugly’ woman (not plain, but like…ugly) would not receive any romantic interest even if she has a good heart. I sound pessimistic as heck here but I find that men would disagree with me in theory but in reality it’s a different story.

I’ve also lost interest in physically attractive women after I got to know them and I gained interest in unattractive women after I got to know them. I’m not denying that personality plays a role but so does the body

I even know a guy who is engaged to a so called ugly woman. She has a great big heart but he definitely is with her because he feels better than her and she caters to his every need because of the difference in attractiveness

But your question was about what is beauty. You did not ask what makes one person more beautiful over another.

After all, not all of us recognize all of God’s beauty and the beauty of His Creation. Nor do we all recognize the beauty God puts in each of us.

I thought it was the same thing tbh. Like if I ask what is beauty I should also have the answer to what makes a person more beautiful than another

It isn’t and when I told him what I thought about it he denied it

He could have found her average in the first place. Like I said beauty can be objective and subjective at the same time. If she doesn’t look below average to him, it’s possible that her inner beauty supercedes the outer

But he’s told me that he feels he’s above average and she loves him more than he loves her

i think it also depends on where you are in maturity. a person who just sees people on the surface is going to have a different idea of beauty compared to someone who has a more developed idea of humanity and what it entails.

Fertility. Youth a young woman is fertile. Younger typically have lighter hair than older women. So blonds have more fun eh. Lipstick, when women are in the mood blood rushes to their lips. Red lipstick exaggerates that signal. Fingernail polish same thing blood and the mood. Mascara imitates pupil dilation an ancient sign for the cavemen. Most things women enhance are signals from the cavewoman that say I’m fertile and want to spread some genes. Cavemen were able to see these signs 100 yards away.💪

Well depends. Some people here will say that everything is beautiful because God created us so there’s no means of comparison.

But doesn’t that sound unrealistic though? Physical attraction would be important in a relationship, no? Not as important as their heart, definitely, but I can’t imagine a marriage where one feels that his/her spouse is not physically appealing

From a purely anatomical perspective, there are certain dimensions and proportions that are considered beautiful. Speaking as an artist and assistant art director, there are objective standards. However, for me, that all goes out the window when I meet any woman who has negative personality traits. The same would apply to men.

Inner beauty and that we are made in the image of God Himself. What could be more beautiful?
