What makes something an Archabbey?

What makes a monastery an archabbey as opposed to just an abbey?
 
Historical reasons and being williing to go through the paperwork.

I think it was Thomas Merton (Fr. Mary Louis) who said, “It’s something that sounds more important than it really is.”
