What makes you think the bible is the word of God?

I think you’re the one, now, who is seeing things because you want to see it.

And unless you’re now blind, I don’t think you’ve stared at the sun long enough to test out your theory. And I don’t think 70,000 people around you tried to stare at the sun either.
Anyone who stares at the sun will get an after image. That will make the sun look darker, as well as produce various colors. If your eye moves at all…whoa, the colors are moving. And if you’re a member of 70,000 people who expect to see a miracle on a certain day…well, there’s your “miracle”.

Oh tigers08; You really haven’t researched it.

Why did 70,000 people look up at the sun? Nobody told them to. They were obviously attracted to a miraculous display in the sky.

You’ve re-written history. You make it out as if 70,000 people were told to stare at the sun. That’s not what happened!

It was raining that day at Fatima, so the people were not staring at the sun for a while, it came out suddenly and appeared to move around strangley in the sky. There were skeptical observers from the secular newspapers who reported the same thing (which you could find out if you objectively researched the story yourself).
They said the rain stopped and the clouds broke, so that’s when they saw the sun. And the movement was their eyes darting and the after image moving. Obviously the sun didn’t really move in relation to the Earth that day. (Well, not out of the usual I mean). Weird how it only appeared to move to a certain region on the Earth…I’m sure only that particular location was looking at the sky at the time, right? And I knew that there were skeptical observers (because I did objectively research it), but they still had the idea in their minds that there was supposed to be a miracle that day, even if they didn’t believe it was going to happen.

Yes, I know they weren’t told to look at the sky. In fact, they weren’t told anything, weird how prophecies are always so ambiguous. But it said the rain had stopped and the clouds were parting, I’m sure that prompted some people to look up. Then the mass hysteria kicked in, and some people thought they “saw” something, so others unconsciously jumped on the band wagon, soon they all thought they saw something. I never said people were told to look at the sun. Sometime when you’re with a group, try looking at the ceiling, and watch how many other people look up too.

Oh well, you see things your way and we see it ours and “never the twain shall meet,” so to speak. You have your reasoning and we have ours, but it is a reasoning at least. Either you have faith or you don’t. End of discussion as far as I’m concerned.

Catholics want to see Mary like UFO enthusiasts want to see lights in the sky. They see what they want to see, that doesn’t mean it’s real.

try staring at the sun for a while and you’ll see the same thing
But it also doesn’t mean that it’s not. Witnesses can be credible. Some of the apparations have been witnessed by previously skeptic Protestants and scientists who wanted to find out if they were true, such as the visions that occured at Mejudgorie and the apparition that has appeared above the coptic church in egypt.

Obviously no one is born thinking a certain book is God’s revelation. Someone had to tell you that the bible is God’s word. So, other than someone telling you, do you have a reason to believe the bible was inspired by God?

In addition to post 9:

its power.

When it is described as authoritative, this is not the describing of a quality added to it externally, but the describing of an impression that it makes. The Word of God is powerful because it is empowered & dynamised & energised by the Spirit Who is its Primary Author.

It is like a boxing-glove - unenergised for its purpose, it is without effect; when the Spirit works through it, it is irresistible, invincible, & shears through all barriers like a razor through air.

A problem with much thinking on Biblical inspiration is that inspiration is seen as a static quality, & as a Divine guarantee that the Bible’s contents have no expiry date.
They don’t - but inspiration is not static; it is intensely dynamic. It make the Bible a living force, like a lion. All too often, we tend to keep the Bible in all sorts of cages - if it were let out, it would transform the Church in ways beyond human control.

The Bible is the best-selling book of the year every single year, for i dunno how long. Very powerful. Oh I thought this fact was neat:

at the end of 2000, the best selling books to date
  1. Holy Bible
  2. Quotations from chairman Mao
  3. Quran
haha Mohammed can’t even beat out Mao!

Jesus Christ. The main person that the bible speaks about is true not only in the bible but even in world history.

Mohammad is true not only in the Quran but in world history as well. How does Jesus being a real person make the bible the word of God?

Mohammad did not rise from the dead. Jesus Christ did! Mohammad is not God. Jesus Christ is!

even right from the start the borrowing of other myths is apparent from the 10 commandments, which are all found in Egyptian book of the dead spell 125.,<except for the first 2 ofcourse>…Noahs ark from gilgamesh…disciples, miracles, baptism, heaven, hellvirgin births, ect… …so the ? is , what GOD? or Gods?

Perhaps those who believe that the bible is absolutely and undeniably the word of God were pre-destined to have this sort of all-or-nothing experience with Catholicism. Some of us born into Catholicism have lived lives that have steered us toward alternate spiritualities and non-Catholic relationships with God. We came to seek elsewhere because those who subscribe to the entire Catholic package could not satisfy our questions with anything convincing regarding some of the teachings of the Church. There will never come a union of these two positions. This forum has shown me that, for the most part, soldiering comes first, kindness second. So, tigers08, maybe it would serve you and your God better to begin a website for those of us who just don’t swallow the whole dogmatic enchilada. I would be a regular.

Bless you for having the guts to ask the questions and for developing the tenacity to wade through the lofty answers.

ps: Do you suppose God had other words not found in the bible?

Thanks! I think a website would be a little more than I could handle, replying to posts on here already takes up quite a bit of my time.

Personally I don’t think God has revealed himself in the way most religions teach. I think the universe is God’s revelation, not a book written by someone who I have no reason to trust. I think God would realize that he cannot ask us to have faith in him by putting our faith in another man.

Only according to the bible, which is why I’m asking what makes you believe it’s true.
Only according to the bible? That is absolutely not true! Christ’s resurrection and Divinity is not “only according to the bible”. Because even before the bible was written, Jesus Christ had already risen from the dead, and He was already God before there even was a bible.
