I’m getting married in November so I’m looking at wedding music at the moment. oen recessional song I just happened on is “It’s the end of the world as we know it” by R.E.M

does anyone else find this kind of strange? I can see the point kind of, since it’s the end of your single world but it sounds kind of…angry

R.E.M. is considered wedding music?

Just like those who pick Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You”. I really don’t think anyone goes past the titles when they pick these songs.

You’re right. One time when I was working for a private school, one of the English teachers picked The Graduation Song by Simon and Garfunkel for the opening song for the grad ceremony.

He had no idea that it was a song about a boy who has an affair with his teacher - which goes to show that even educated people often don’t hear or understand the lyrics, when they listen to music.

We were not allowed to have any secular music at our wedding not even the wedding march. Apparently the wedding march comes from an opera (I think opera) where it ends in an adulterous affair. We were allowed only to have “High” Church Music

Ode to Joy was the Recessional

There was a wedding today and last week the bride called to see what she could have for music. I told her anything out of the hymnals and that it couldn’t be secular music.

She came in to get copies of the hymnals and I pointed out some of the hymns that were very appropriate, one being “God Who Blesses New Beginnings”.

“Oh, I don’t think that would be appropriate for us, we’ve been living together for years!”

“Er, that may well be so but now you’re getting married which is very much a new beginning, particularly as far as the Church is concerned.”

Fast forward to today, I’m in the office doing paperwork and I hear the music being rehearsed. Not a religious piece to be heard. One of the selections was Alison Krauss’s “When You Say Nothing At All” Great for the first dance but for a Liturgy?? Why are people so stunned? Once again the pastor said “Oh, anything you want is ok.”

Now, mind you, when I got married my selections were as bad, if not worse, but that’s because nobody told me anything about what was appropriate or what I could & couldn’t have – the only thing I knew was that the priest who witnessed our marriage had forbidden “Ave Maria” from being sung at weddings. Why, I don’t know.
