Religion is no less an amoral device for imposing an arbitrarily constructed will upon the general population
I would argue that if everyone did take Catholicism or Christianity seriously we would not have war, greed, expression of jealousy, murder, violence, rape, etc. If people did not have sex outside of marriage we would not have syphilis, HIV/AIDS, unwanted children, abortions, most ectopic pregnancies, pelvic inflammatory disease, many causes of infertility, cervical cancer in women, ano-rectal cancer in gay men, etc. Life would objectively be much better. I therefore don’t think Christian/Catholic religion is arbitrary. Diseases such as HPV cervical cancer would never have evolved if people had one sex partner their entire lives, neither would HIV etc. I gather however that sexual pleasure is a driver and people prioritise their own temporary release of endorphins over well being of others. We know how compassionate child sex abusers are.
It’s based on the value each individual holds for his or her own life.
But sometimes we do not attach much value to our lives. Some people find their ideology is more important then their life. Many Bolsheviks, Nazis, Fascists, imperialist Japanese, Maoists, nationalists, liberals, etc laid their lives and expected others to lay their lives in the name of ideology. Yet other people suffer from low self esteem, depression, personality disorder, autism etc and do not relate well to others or relate well to the value of their own lives. We also find that culture has strong effects too - take for example the paranoia which occurs in your country Australia from fundamentalist Christian and atheists to some Muslims and contrast that to a place like South Africa where Muslims and Christians basically get on well with each other. It seems our Muslims here are never offended by Churches.
When empathy, which is a deeply ingrained quality of the human species, ceases to exist,
As previously metioned, empathy is often overruled or suppressed. Do you think the Nazis who killed Jews were psychopathic killers without empathy? Did the Communists who executed entire families lack empathy? Nope. These were people who showed deep empathy to their own kind but did what was required of them when necessary.
Rights are disregarded by those who don’t understand the nature of the social contract. Mostly by those who think they’re serving a ‘higher’ purpose by
I love your selectivity. More people have been killed in secular crimes for secular utopian or even logically reasonable causes then killed by a few Jihadists. In fact if we are to go by empirical data it is the secular power (which is rising as religious influence dwindles and moral relativism) which is most dangerous and will lead likely to more suffering in the future. Most Muslims actually don’t blow themselves up, take my word for it. If they did, with their numbers, we’d see many more underpants bombers and 911’s.

Even if you look at road accident deaths in your country. More people die in accidents or suffer from consequences of negligence and malice (eg drunk driving) than Islamic red herrings.
much the way medieval religious types thought they were doing humanity a service by burning ‘witches’…
In order to maintain societal stability at a time where people did not know how to do it better and were themselves not often very Christian in their behaviour. But hey, they had empathy. Also not all witches were burned because of witchcraft and not all witchcraft was innocent. In Africa witches make medication called muti from bodies of children - the children must be killed first. Obviously there can be other reasons why witches are disliked. Albino children are also often targeted by witchdoctors. I would assume, not being racist, that white European witches may have had similar behaviours and may have also preached superstitions which may have been destabilising.
How are they binding in any way, shape or form upon contemporary human life?
They work. They’re also reasoned out by thousands of years of philosophy - guys like Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, onto guys like Augustine, Thomas Aquinas onto guys like Leibniz, Kant, Kolakowski, etc., numerous Vatican councils, thousands of academics, etc. Sometimes work of secular philosophers is also incorporated.

In fact they tend sometimes not to work because they’re not taken seriously enough by people in their personal lives, who choose to follow secular mainstream pop morality rather - consequentionalism.
If you have your eyes on the heavenly prize, it’s all too easy to forget the here and now.
Not in my religious family and I don’t know a single religious person who is persecutory towards others. In fact I find myself more open minded and tolerant than bigots like Dawkins. It seems our empirical data is at odds. I find most religious people to be more friendly, respectful and kind than most atheists, I meet. For one, I realise that I don’t have all the answers but at least the general direction Christianity takes is superior to everything else.
It’s a good basis if it’s not corrupted by irrationality and supernatural paranoia.
And this depends on the metaphysics you choose.
They are real only if they are based upon the way we live our lives in everyday reality.
I presume you are satisfied with the level of morality in the world. There is no suffering and everyone is happy and equally free. Things are great and work well. The guy who walked past you in the street, the one you did not bludgeon because bludgeoning him would make you a target for bludgeoning is perfectly happy and doesn’t need any help. We can put religion away because since the Enlightenment we have solved all problems and everyone is nice to everyone else.

And if everyone took Islam seriously than life would be objectively better; better as Islam defines it. If life is better if everyone prays 5 times a day then of course Islam makes life objectively better because Islam has defined “better” into existence!

All you are doing here is dressing up the old chestnut about atheists having no basis for morality, and this has been debunked time and again.
There is a basis for morality which does not necessarily depend on an individual’s belief in God because the basis is an objective truth. This basis is that the human person is worthy of profound respect.

And if everyone took Islam seriously than life would be objectively better; better as Islam defines it. If life is better if everyone prays 5 times a day then of course Islam makes life objectively better because Islam has defined “better” into existence!
Irrelevant. Better as a world free of HIV/AIDS. Free of cervical cancer from which hundreds of thousands women die each year in terrible circumstances - bone mets from CA Cervix are terribly painful and respond poorly to analgesia. Better as a world where people can really trust each other because appearances are not king.
And so on… as mentioned previously.

What Moral Right Does An Atheist Have?

It seems to me that atheists have no true moral rights if we assume the legitimacy of their world view.<—But we don’t assume the legitimacy of their view, so fortunately for atheists (in Christian nations at least) they will still have the same moral rights as everyone else; which has been historically untrue in nations where atheists have run things.
The problem for atheists isn’t that they lack any type of moral rights. They just lack any credibility when it comes to making moral arguments.

As long as the subject matter doesn’t include the common sense of atheism or the fact of evolution. Which have been “temporarily” banned for nearly two years now… (and the mods have never 'fessed up to the REAL reason for banning these topics either).
WOW!!..sounds like you have secret information:rolleyes:…maybe you should enlighten us with your knowledge.

Can’t wait to hear this one…🍿

There is no “Christian Nation”. But it is true that atheists and non-theists, in taken things granted, unconsciously express Christian concepts, or a sense of metaphysical value. It only stands to reason that when they see no threat in accepting the intrinsic meaning that permeates our existential experiences, they tend to be motivated by those same concepts. But when asked to metaphysically justify their position, they come to realize the implication of God which is more than enough for them to conclude that they were in error about that which they took for granted. To save face they pretend as if in the first place they were not really compelled by a sense of objective moral-rights/moral-realism. Todays society has its roots in Christianity; but we no-longer truly live in a Christian society.

Sure…an atheist can be moral.

And i can tell you this: The only difference between a Christian and an Atheist is the subtle fact that a holy man is compelled to give glory only to God; while atheists, insofar as they deem a goal worthy of their attention, are content on giving glory only onto themselves.

Sorry if I was a bit vague 😊. I 'll try again.

Why is this world better?

My feeling is that if I asked why a world free of HIV is better you would, eventually, have to appeal to God’s nature at some point. My point is trying to convince a non-believer that Catholicism would make the world “objectively better” involves you presupposing a definition of "objectively better"which he could only accept if he accepted Catholicism.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m pro-Catholicism but trying to convince an non-believer that Catholicism makes life “better” as Catholics define it seems a bit… weird.

Hopefully that made more sense.

Alternatively, you could appeal to his conscience or something. But then you wouldn’t be arguing that Catholicism makes life “objectively better” only that the things that Catholicism push are in line with his personal preferences.

The prevention or reduction of disease by means of a committed Christian lifestyle is obviously serving an objective benefit to human sexual health. If its not obvious enough let me point it out to you again. The prevention or reduction of a disease by means of a committed Christian lifestyle is obviously serving an objective benefit to human sexual health. The question is not whether it does benefit human society, the question is whether we are prepared to make the necessary sacrifices in-order to obtain that benefit. Human society wasn’t prepared to make that sacrifice. Why? Modern society is immature, and promotes an immature indulgent perverse view of human sexuality; and thats why we are plagued with sexually transmitted diseases in the first place. Some people would rather take the risk of disease than live a Christian lifestyle.

Why ought I care about human sexual health?

It means that a living person has an intrinsic objective moral value. If this is true, then it is wrong for example to rape a child. It is wrong because this would be destructive to the physical and psychological value of the living child. In this respect a child has a moral right not to be raped, because the value of a living person is intrinsic and objective rather than subjective and dynamic according to the ideology or opinion of somebodies whim, taste, or fancy.

If rights are merely subjective and conjured up according to taste and aversion to pain, then moral rights are coercive delusions. In this case, it is not wrong to rape women children or men. Every time that you think that it is objectively true that you have the moral high ground you are in fact walking unconsciously in to a fallacy caused by chemical illusions in your brain. The preservation of life is meaningless. That you perceive yourself or anybody as having value is a fantasy. Empathy is the irrational expression of mans desire to be more than a meaningless physical object. Moral truth becomes irrational and thus no virtue truly exists.

Therefore the atheist has no moral rights.
Cutting through the elaborate explanation, if I understand you, then you are saying that the worth of a person is determined their beliefs.

I think you forgot about the soul.

Why ought I care about human sexual health?
Well thats just the thing, as an atheist or non-theist you have no rational reason to percieve anything as having any moral value beyond the fantasies of your imagination. In your world, raping a child is no more immoral than - lets say - helping a old women cross the road; for there is no difference in value. It is delusional to believe in moral truth if you subscribe to the belief that the world is nothing more than the variations of energy or physical interactions we measure through the sciences. That you percieve life as worth living, or that you own something of true value, or have a true value as a so called “person”, is to express the same kind of delusions which atheists accuse theism of doing. The only differences i see between an atheist and a theist is that the theist doesn’t actually have positive knoweldge that there is no God, and so there is at the very least a degree of rational honesty in having blind hope in such a being. However, the atheist who admits that there is no moral value to life “knows” that their expression of moral significance is an absolute fallacy, and so their displays of moral significance and moral glory is nothing but a deceptive facade with out even the dignity of a blind faith.

A true rational atheist knows there is no objectively rational reason to continue existing; for existence has no true objective value. Fear of death and the belief that life is worth living, or is something that should be lived, reveals nothing more than the fact that you are a deluded slave and that your sense of significance is merely a product of the irrational emotions that comprise part of your being. Thus on the basis of a rationality that has no space for faith in objective moral significance and human existential value, sucide is the only trully free and rational choice that one can make since life is not for the living; it is not about survival since there is no purpose to it, therefore why are we surviving? Being alive is meaningless, and rational man does not partake in what he knows or believes to be a meaningless emotional delusion (just like the atheist does not partake in religions because they believe it to be a meaningless emotional delusion). In other words, the fact that you persue life is in fact irrational and is purely an emotionally driven act from which only sucide can set you free.

When i was faced with the challege of suicide, i could not except the idea that absolute sceptcism is more rational than hope in God. For in God there is at least a mystery, and it seems to me that it is folly to reduce ones self to nothing when one has no evidence that life really isn’t worth living. But If i choose to live, i must live for the hope of God, for to hope in God is to hope that life is rational and is as intrinsically and objectively meaningful as it evidently appears to be.

To deny objective morality, is to justify the rapist, the murderer, the slave owner, the oppressor, the nihilist; for they do nothing wrong.

Well thats just the thing, as an atheist or non-theist you have no rational reason to percieve anything as having any moral value beyond the fantasies of your imagination.
Doesn’t this support what I’ve been saying all along ? That it’s NOT self-evident to (at least some) non-believers that Catholicism is an “objectively better” way to live your life? some people on this thread seemed to think it was…

Why ought I be rational? :D. I don’t know about you but I am only rational to the extent that reason serves my preferred ends.

There is a problem in comparing emotions to delusions. Delusions are truth-apt beliefs that are false while emotions are not truth-apt all.

Your statement has no rational authority, but is merely an expression of your desires. You choose to use rational arguments; i am merely taking them to their rational conclusions. If you want to be irrational when it suits you; congratulations you are the first atheist on this forum to admit that the foundation of your non-belief is denial and irrationality, since you do not hold to rationality when it counts against your fantasy. That hardly puts you in a trusted position to judge either intellectually or morally since you are not honest enough to face the inevitable truth that follows from metaphysical fact. This bars you from rational discourse and puts you in the category of a troll, who is not really interested in honest debate. Of course you are free trivialize truth, but that does not change the fact that you are a deluded atheist in so far as rational discourse is concerned.

The atheist says that rational truth trumps emotional beliefs, beliefs that stem from a desire to be valued and to have value; for example “Christianity”, at least in the atheists opinion since he or she certainly doesn’t believe that Christians have rational grounds for holding that objective moral values exists. If rational truth is what leads you to disbelieve in the emotional leap of faith held by Christians, then in so far as one wants to be rationally consistent and honest, the same must be also true in cases where one feels emotionally inclined to believe that his life has significance, that life is worth living; that life is about living, that you should believe in yourself and that this is “true”. If there is no objective moral value to life, then the conclusion that one should act out of any emotional attachment to ones own existence, such as the fear of death or the desire for life, is irrational since such emotions incline us to make value judgments about an existence which has no true objective value. A truly rational person will rise above their feelings, and in so doing will reject emotions that lead to self preservation as irrational, because a rational person does not form beliefs about the world or what he should do in the world on emotion grounds given the fact that emotions have no rational value.

A rational person does not act on irrational emotions if emotions do not tell us anything true about life or anything true about the real world. While you might find emotional reasons for living, you have lost the rational right to conclude that such emotions are a rational basis to exist. Your choice to exist is a value judgment; you value your life in that you are attempting to save that which you perceive as valuable, that which you would like to have value. But If you truly accept that your life has no intrinsic value, then you will not act as if it does and you will accept that it does not, since to behave and think as if it did would be contrary to the truth, being a denial of reality, and thus would be an irrational act.

However; if life does have intrinsic moral value, then it is objectively rational for me to save my life, because that act is rationally consistent with a person that has true moral value. the fact is, in the real world atheists do believe that they have rational reasons for acting or certain emotions. Thats a fact which is displayed by the very fact that they continue to exist.

Your statement has no rational authority, but is merely an expression of your desires.
All actions are means to a preferred end. You have to have the desire to be rational before you can engage in reason no? Is the desire to engage in reason reasonable? I don’t think it is.

Actually my unbelief is largely because God seems to lack a positive coherent ontology. Why do I care about ontology or truth? Because I had to pass a course. Disregarding my beliefs simply because I had no reasonable reason to engage in reason (LOL:D) commits an appeal to motive.

I’m sorry that think I’m a troll but I’m finding your argument confusing. It basically sounds like.

P1. If atheism is true there are no oughts
P2. No oughts means no reason to live

Therefore, atheists OUGHT kill themselves because they OUGHT be rational all the time.

Such trickery of words will only earn my dislike of you. I am not trying to convince you to kill yourself. I am saying that Atheists would kill themselves if they were truly committed to the rational consequences of their world view; which you obviously are not.

It seems to me that atheists have no true moral rights if we assume the legitimacy of their world view.
You hold to natural law ethics, correct? Isn’t it the case that natural law ethics per se does not depend on the existence of God? An atheist can still hold to objective morality through natural law.

That being said, atheism does tend toward an ontology that makes natural law not an option.
