I have heard so many different answers to this question. Below are just a few that I have heard from Christians:

-Believe in Jesus
-Have faith in Jesus
-Accept Jesus as your personal lord and savior
-Be baptized
-Receive the Eucharist
-Follow the ten commandments
-Follow the precepts of the church
-Die without having an unconfessed mortal sin
-Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, etc.
-Seek God with and contrite humble heart
-Frequent the sacraments
-Sell all your possessions and follow Jesus

While we can all agree that salvation comes alone from God, which item(s) from this list, or otherwise, must one do to be saved? Also, does the list of what is required for salvation differ between Christians and non-Christians, (both those who are familiar with Christianity and just don’t believe as well as those who have never heard of Christianity)?

The first two are the same thing, since to believe in him is to believe he is worthy of all faith, and the last is only a requirement for those whose possessions are holding them back from following him.
The third is how Evangelicals interpret the first two.
The fourth and fifth are included in the eleventh.
The sixth through the ninth are closely related examples of what it means to follow Jesus, and are sometimes summarized in the Golden Rule and the Two Great Commands, but go further than what might look to the average person to come under those terms. It may be hard to understand what loving God has to do with one rule or loving your neighbor has to do with some other rule, but it’s all related.
And all can be summarized in the tenth. It can also be grouped as “do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with your God” and in some other ways as well.
The Sacraments and good deeds are necessary when possible. In some cases they aren’t possible, and God then sees our willingness to do these things and acknowledges that.

We are saved by Jesus Christ and Him alone, but must perseverance in faith and works.

It’s not really a checklist you know. The simple answer is cooperate with His grace by doing His will. The rest comes from following Him, faith, repentance, receive Sacraments, forgive, do charity, etc…

Ask and ye shall receive. It’s not that complicated.

This question in itself strikes me as peculiar. What is is about us that motivates us to want to reduce the Teaching of Christ to a Reader’s Digest version? Is it minimalist thinking?

Matt 28:18-20
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and **teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded **you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Why do we wish to go from “obey all that I have commanded” to “which one thing” ?

“Unless a man is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.”

I asked my daughter the other day (10 years old), “How are you born of the Spirit?” She said, “Ask Jesus to come into your heart.” I asked her, “How are you born of water?” She said, “Be baptized.” Pretty plain, I thought. (Yes, I am bragging a little bit about my children.) 🙂

But I also agree with doing the whole counsel of God. Not saved by faith alone, but by faith which leads to obedience.

We’re to come to love God with our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength and our neighbor as ourselves. The “getting there” is not so easy and totally a work of Gods’ grace. To that end Jesus established His Church, providing her with the message and the means necessary for our salvation.
