by Seeking12: Do you think Paul or Peter knew they would be in Heaven? Why? Why was 1 John written?
This Is Written That You May Know
13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.
As I said before; God doesn’t keep us guessing, that is from the devil. But with that said, you may have good reason for doubts; I reccommend two things 1) a real heart examination to see if you are int he faith and 2) be like those Bereans and see if what you are taught is in accord with God.
What must a person do in order to actually believe in (the name of the Son of) God?

Satan and other fallen angels, demons, etc. believe that Jesus Christ exists but they are not saved.

I’m not sure I fully understand the question. You can believe in God if you want, there is nothing you have to do besides have faith.

If you are talking about salvation, there is more to it than just having faith.

The passage you quoted is from 1 John 5:13. Verse 13 begins his concluding remarks. In order for these to make sense, you must first read verses 1-12. These verses explain the things that he is talking about.

We must have faith in, be committed to, and obey Him. By His Grace, through faith, working in love.

1 John 3:24 “Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.”

1 John 2:4 “He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.”

The Church in her Catechism teaches us that God created us to know, love and serve the Him. And God’s Commandments command us to love the Lord our God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength…and our neighbor as ourself. So do what you were made for: seek to know the Lord, read the Catechism and Bible, read good Catholic books…love the Lord, obey his commandments (the Ten Commandments) and the Six precepts (Commands) of the Church…serve the Lord, do your best to be pleasing to Him in all you do…with every fiber of your being, with every movement of your mind and body love the Lord God…and treat your neighbor as you would have them treat you. Avoid occasions of sin and pray too. Do everything always for the greater glory of God.

If you don’t believe in Him desire to believe in Him and pray to God to give you this desire if you don’t already have it…and just trust that Jesus died for you and speaks through his Church. He did say to the apostles of the early Church, “He who hears you, hears me.” Take a leap of faith and believe in Jesus if you doubt he existed or was God…and pray to God being honest about your feelings of disbelief and agnosticism, if applicable.

I agree with you. Many people believe that all they have to do is say that they believe in Jesus Christ and accept Him as their Savior and then they are “eternally secure.”

Scripture does not support this belief even though it may feel warm and fuzzy to them. It is a false sense of security because it is not true.

Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.”

Just one point; Satan and the other fallen angels DO NOT BELIEVE that Jesus Christ exists and is the Son of God, THEY KNOW IT. There is no need for faith on their part to have knowledge of something obvious to them. It is only mankind while still on earth that NEEDS Faith. 😉

I hadn’t thought of “believe” and “know” as meaning two different things. Thank you for the clarification. 👍
