My grandmother on commenting on a recent photo of me said I looked like a minister. She said of course it will probally be Father ____ which is a shame but I wont be here to see it. Why would she say that? Whats wrong with being a priest? I dont feel called to a vocation but regardless just thought id share this anyway.

Nothing, of course, unless you’re a committed Protestant and it’s your child or grandchild. That’s only natural. Imagine your son becoming a Muslim imam – wouldn’t you think, “That’s a shame, I would have hoped he’d stay in the faith and, if anything, become a priest”?

Protestant parents think about family. …babies, which in her case means grandbabies. She wants to see her legacy continues. Protestants don’t get celibacy in the way we and the ancient church does. Their faith is much different than Catholics.

Even Catholics struggle with the priest versus children/ grandchildren issue.

I like being a priest 🙂
Cool!
We have 3 sons; the oldest has has “the best” Catholic preparation and actually “flaunts” what he knows to me sometimes ( I am a convert 🙂 Since first grade we have been told “XXXX would make a great priest someday” or “I bet XXXX will be a priest”. He is 13 now and wants nothing to do with that notion. In fact one day we were in line at a church Lenten fish fry and and older priest saw our family standing in line with our 3 boys and the priest made a b-line to XXXX and said “Are you going to be a priest?” We did not know this priest. XXXX looked embarassed and said 'NO" in a semi-polite way and the priest said “Well you never know until you ask”, he then looked at our second son who looked even more HORRIFED 🙂 And asked him if he liked sports! Very insightful!!!😃

Kind of an odd compairson??? 🙂 Yes, if any of my sons turn Muslim I will be upset. If however they become Protestant I will not be quite as worried 🙂 I grew up Protestant so there is always hope for conversion if I can do it!👍

Sounds like a very spirit filled priest who got a word of knowledge!!! Sometimes boys do not want to admit they have thought about being a priest, but he is probably thinking about it now.

Having a son become a priest actually could be a great blessing. He can give you Mass, all the sacraments, your last right and your funeral…what a blessing!

I would be OK with it actually 🙂 It would be the first in my family!!!

Priests have this sort of charism to discern, especially those assigned to the seminary. Who knows, God may be calling your son…just pray for enlightenment about it…and put your trust in the Lord.

True, But not exactly in the same way. Mom hated the thought of me becoming a priest and she hated the Catholic Church. Dad seemed thrilled that I entered the seminary, but my mother went through the roof both times I talked about it and started saying hateful things about the Blessed Mother. Even Protestants don’t usually think like that unless they are fundamentalists. And even their it just depends.

I met Fr Robert Fox, of Fatima fame, on two occasions, once when he travelled to Australia, and a second time when I went on pilgrimage to Fatima with him. On both occasions, he told me I should be in the seminary. (I had already decided to go, once I had finished my apprenticeship, but he knew, despite scarcely knowing me).

***Know our faith

Live our Faith publically

Share our faith if and when the opportunity arrises

And Love and pray for those who don’t… AMEN!***

Hi, Fr. Mike…what country are you?

My brother was assigned to the seminary for about 15 years, right after his ordination, before he even had his first parish assignment. Though he did not talk about it, I knew he would spend time in silence for discernment when recommending candidates to the priesthood for ordination.
