What a great blog post! I am impressed that you took your two year old to the library. And that she was adamant in not wanting to steal any books!

I think she believed somebody owned the books and that we would hurt this person by taking his property. I highly doubt she understood about civil law or sinning against God, but I do think she understood sinning against a person, that is, she understood causing another person pain.

However, that was not the point. The point was her reaction to just the suggestion of taking some of the books with us.

Reminds me of a trip to my grandmas when I was about 6-7. Me and my dad were looking at her garden and he said ‘Let’s steal a radish’. He picked a couple of radishes and we ate them. I was giggling I though it was so funny. We went into the house and it hit me that I had ‘stolen’. I asked my mom for a private chat. I saw the look of concern on her face and we went into a private room. I confessed that me and dad had ‘stolen’. The relief on her face when she found out what it was. Yet the headache she had trying to explain to me it wasn’t really stealing 🙂

When my youngest was about 3 or so we went to library. Our library has a section for small kids to play. It featured a variety of toys. When it was time to leave my older two had some books to check out. The little guy took two small dinosaur toys and thought we could check those out. Three year old children don’t really see the logic on how you can check out a book but not a dinosaur.
