The dead giveaway (that they’re not focusing on inner beauty) is the fact that they rarely have any makeover subjects over the age of 40 (much less over 50 or over 60), and they generally feature women who, after their makeovers, could be described (in Stacy’s words) as “hot tamales” (although I appreciate the fact that most of the woman have normal figures, and don’t look like runway models).
Maybe most women over 40 have gotten their sense of style more developed than the women nominated? I would hope that someone would have staged an intervention before that age. I know that I dress a whole lotter better now than I did in my 20’s (scary Flashdance & Madonna outfits). I have seen a couple of tacky looking grandmas on the show who were still trying to wear minis and tank tops. One older woman with loads of animal prints comes to mind.
That being said, I still enjoy watching the show, although I will never understand the obsession with pointy-toed shoes – maybe they give you a longer leg line, but they can also make your feet look like they’re two feet long.
I’m with you on the pointy shoes. I have a few pairs that look OK, but I’m already wearing a 12 so who needs more shoe!
I also wish they would feature more reasonably priced clothing. $5,000 sounds like a lot of money for clothes, but how much of a wardrobe will you have when you’re spending several hundred dollars per piece? They do show some lower-priced garments, but they invariably pair those garments with some super-expensive item.
On their special they said that they have a list of stores for the people which include some high end and some moderate like H&M and even Lane Bryant for the plus size gals. If I was handed $5000 I think I would invest in a really good quality coat, suit and at least one pair of nice shoes that might cost more than my usual stuff. I do the mix and match price thing anyway but with a lower “top end” than they show because I can wait for a sale or clearance on the expensive stuff and buy off season too.
One more little gripe: Stacy and Clinton don’t seem to want to accept that women have lives outside the office. They expect women to wear clothing that is very dressy and extremely tailored – ALL THE TIME! I can’t even dress like that in the office (I would be about three times more dressed up than my boss, and I would look totally out of place); I certainly wouldn’t wear those outfits to mow the lawn or pick weeds out of the garden.
I think part of their problem is that they are based in NYC. Unrealistic view of the world. Even the “ladies who lunch” that I know don’t dress like they suggest for running to the grocery. We are all about the capris and city shorts with sandals in Dallas for running errands. They would probably hate anyone wearing capris for anything except boating or the beach.
Oh well, they’d never choose me anyway. I’m too old, and I won’t wear heels, or pointy-toes shoes, or sleeveless garments, or plunging necklines, or makeup, and my hair is too short for the stylist to have any fun with it.
You are probably just too well dressed to get humiliated on national TV by your friends and family. I know a couple of people who I would like to nominate, but they would not take it well even with $5000 to spend.
