What novena do you suggest?

I would like to pray my first novena. There are some issues (personally and as a parent) that I’m having trouble with, and I feel like a novena would be a good place to start.

What novena would you suggest, then? What novenas have you prayed, and did they work or didn’t they (“work” being defined as, did it help you overcome a struggle or was your specific petition answered)? Did you pray a novena to a specific saint? Is there a novena that you keep going back to pray again?

Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated!
 
My first novena was for the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. I believe it is the first and oldest novena coming from pentecost and the only novena prescribed by the Church. Be spiritually prepared for the answer to this novena.ewtn.com/devotionals/pentecost/seven.htm

Another I have done and answered for a personal need was the novena to St. Therese. Even though I did it incorrectly, it was still answered in a profound way.ewtn.com/therese/novena.htm

I highly suggest praying the Chaplet of Divine Mercy as a novena, as Jesus told St. Faustina. You can find it here: thedivinemercy.org/message/devotions/whatarenovenas.php

I’d also suggest a novena to St. Monica, since you mentioned having some difficulties as a parent. She was the mother of St. Augustine, and prayed her whole life for the conversion of him (he was quite different at one time) and her husband (who converted on his deathbed). For information on St. Monica, visit us in the “St. Monica - praying for our husbands” thread in Family Life – it’s a “sticky” at the top. 🙂

Also, EWTN has a lot of novenas and other prayers listed. Go to www.ewtn.com and a little bit down on the right there’s a section called “Today’s Mass Readings and Homily” – click on it, then click on devotions at the top. There’s a very nice on to the Holy Family in the novena section. 🙂

My personal experience with novenas to Jesus, Mary and the Saints has been abysmal. I therefore wouldn’t recommend any.

What I would recommend is just asking and talking to the Father about what your needs are and trusting he will do what is best for you. You don’t need set words to talk with God, just speak what’s on your mind and in your heart - trust him - and he will listen and respond
