What one author says about the Muslim "religion"

As far as I can tell, honor killing is not specifically Islamic, it’s tribal. To the extent that it happens, it happens a lot in Islamic societies because those societies are also tribal, and some people think it is Islamically permitted or even mandated. As with every other controversial thing related to Islam and Islamic societies, the truth of what is or is not allowed in Islam is according to who you ask, but I hope we can all agree that establishing Islam’s guilt is not nearly as important as preventing the crimes themselves.
Yes, from the articles posted earlier, I would agree with your assessment that this terrible practice is not based on what any particular religion teaches.
For all the Muslims who also suffer under it, there are also many who are vocally against it. See for instance, Arabs and Muslims against “Honour” Crimes, a webpage dedicated to exposing and eliminating this barbaric practice. Why not send messages of support to them instead of bickering on these forums?
Why do we have to choose? We can do both! 😛

I’m not sure whether my single post to this thread can be construed as “bickering” (if the bickering comment was in fact directed at me) since “bickering” is defined as “petulant quarreling” and tone is notoriously subjective on the internet; I certainly didn’t think I was being petulant, rude or insulting towards Ferdie, just questioning the soundness of his logic in ascribing honor killings to Islam. That said, I agree with most of what you wrote here, although I might quibble with the suggestion that we can never get to the truth of whether its condoned by the religion or not. It’s often hard work to get to the truth but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth the trouble even if it involves a certain amount of quarreling.

It wasn’t. I was simply trying to point out that there are more constructive ways to deal with this problem that don’t involve having to lay blame on this or that before deciding to actually do something about what we all agree is a bad practice, no matter what the root cause of it is.
