I would say in this day and age, we are certainly a rare commodity for having waited especially in our twenties… but this can only make us more united with Christ who was rejected by many and few wanted to associate with him because of demanding teaching. it does mean picking up your cross and following after Christ everyday and trusting in him. He may be calling us soon to marriage or the single life for awhile or even religious life… but in all three we can be witnesses to a world that sees sex as a right, and physical pleasure as our purpose, forgeting God’s ways which lead to true joy and happiness.
To this end, we are called to be Saints and radiate with a joy that finds not its source in the world, but in knowledge of being sons and daughters of God; a joy that radiates in darkness even when life is a struggle. This type of joy is what overcomes the darkness of false promises that the Devil gives us, and helps to set people free from his snares.
There are several wonderful Catholic women out there if you look for them (some of the online catholic dating sites are great resources and I have some wonderful Catholic friends who are girls waiting and hoping for the right Catholic guy to come their way). I have been blessed to be dating my girlfriend now who shares similar values and likes with me and I am so glad I waited because I feel she is the one and feel that will make our wedding night extra special knowing we both waited for each other (though for those reading who have not, secondary virginity is a real thing attainable through God’s mercy-so do not think this is over for you… we are all sinners).
Keep up the fight and when someone looks at you funny for not having sex, tell them your greatest joy will be the only one for your wife and that the fleating pleasures of premarital sex will never give you that same happiness…

This is such a beautiful post–I just might print this! I’m married, and waited…and so glad that I did! Bless you for sharing this with us…really, it is very moving to read!🙂

Ok, coming from someone who was raised Catholic in a Catholic country (Mexico), I can say that even if you go to Mass every day and come from a very devout famiy, it doesn’t mean you’ll practice abstinence. I know so many of my Mexican friends who say they are devout have gotten pregnant before marriage or have had sex before marriage 20+ and under that age range too.

I wasn’t from a weekly Mass going family, I come from a family of divorce and a fallen away family, and sadly, I cannot say I waited. I wish I had. I hung out with the wrong people, and they were Catholics (Mexican, Canadian and South American Catholics from devout families). I was pressured into it, I was young and stupid. My grandparents are devout and they tried taking me to Mass every Sunday but when I was a teen, I wanted nothing to do with God, I became very Americanized (as we Mexicans say) and became a brat. I was shy, had good grades, obeyed my parents, but when it came to boyfriends and such, I made the wrong choices.

So, count all my friends (most are Catholic, one is a non denom. Christian and some were Armenian Orthodox)… none practiced it (and I’m talking about at least 20 of my friends here). I tried to practice it and my back then bf went crazy and wanted to break up. I wanted to wait till marriage… 😦

I do.

And I know this is a little off topic but sort of related. A survey done at the “secular” University that I attend determined that only 20% of first year university students were not virgins and it didn’t get higher than 50% until third year. These statistics surprised me. Enough bad stuff happens without assuming depressing statistics. We are called to be saints. Try to imagine living the best that you can and live up to God’s standards, not the world’s because it is only him that is going to matter in the end.

God Bless and Good Luck
