What power do curses have?

While watching random top 10 videos, I came across a movie where a gypsy curse a woman who took her house, and a demon dragged her to hell.

I don’t think that could ever happen, considering demons can’t take life unless God wills it, but that brought up another question. If someone in contact with demons curses another person, would physical harm come to that person? Or would it just be mental/emotional?

I think I saw the same movie awhile back…was it called ‘drag me to hell’ or something like that?

I thought the ending was pretty scary, she thought she had overcome the demon only to be literally drug to hell.

Im not sure if any curses could do this or not, I guess it depends on the person doing the cursing, thats why its always best to treat everyone good imo.

Yeah, 'Drag Me To Hell" was the movie. I only saw the ending, but it chilled me to the bone. I hope I can forget it soon.

A curse is the opposite of a blessing. They are quite real. When Jesus cursed the fig tree, it was not without a very dramatic effect. The result evoked astonishment – as it indeed would.

As for the powers of hell and the preternatural abilities of demons, which is a separate question, it is an image and a reality best elongated from the mind.

This is far beyond the possibility of what demons can do. It is God who judges people and decides on their eternal fate. Demons cannot kidnap living people in such a way. The media often have a bizarre demonology and angelology alien to Catholic wisdom and from the thousands of years of Catholicism’s experience in the matter.

Curses can have a real effect, especially on those not close to God. If you want to learn more in this area, you could read “An Exorcist Tells His Story,” by Gabrielle Amorth, the chief exorcist of the diocese of Rome, Italy.

The bible is filled with examples concerning blessings and curses, which may have tangible effects on human persons, society, and, in some cases, entire civilizations.

Some examples include:

“A Father’s blessing gives strong roots, but a Mother’s curse uproots the plant.”

To Israel, Old Testament
“Obey my commandments faithfully, and you will be blessed with ample rain, hearty crops, and many children. Disobey, and you will be oppressed by your enemies on all sides. In times of war, when your cities are besieged, mothers will consume their offspring.”

Generational curses are also mentioned in scripture. “I will punish the children of those who hate me for several generations, up to the third or fourth generations.”

In modern-day times, some people say “God bless you”, or some variation of that statement.

At the end of mass, the priest imparts a blessing to us. :bounce:

I would say the truly faithful to God, those who have many more blessings than curses…curses have no power. o.O

Curses do more harm to the curser than the cursee They are deliberately blaspheming God while the recipient is protected by God (generally speaking)

As you allude to, it depends on what God permits.

My understanding is that a curse is simply the introduction of the evil spirit into the life of another. The extent of damage that this can lead to is something that only God knows, and the evil spirit is bound by certain fences, as it were.
