When Jerome, after studying with Jewish sources, raised the question of the dueterocanonicals do we have any record of the reply he was given and the reasons included in the reply ?

I am not really asking anything about the correctness of the decision just what was told him, and also any others who at his time or earlier raised the same questions. Any sources of this information are appreciated.

Although I don’t have any sources available, didn’t St. Pope Damasus tell our good St. Jerome just how the proverbial cow chews the fat?

I understand his point was these are the scriptures we received from the apostles and our authority rests with them and what they delivered to us not with what later, or even other, Jewish sources may or may not say. I understand that to be the Church’s position to this day.

I further understand based on my study of the dueterocanonical works compared with the new testament that indeed the Church seems correct in its position.

But what I am specifically looking for is the answers and the reasons given for those answers that were given to Jerome and to others who raised these questions around that same time. Not looking to know what was and wasn’t included rather the stated reasons behind it.

Thanks!
