I have noticed that this issue is centering around politics more than religion, and this disturbs me.

It seems that most of us here are focusing on issues like religious right issues like abortion and homosexuality, and agreeing with Protestant sects that agree with the Catholic church there.

But at the same time, many are ignoring theological issues. Catholics do not beleive in “gettin saved” that baptism only gets us wet. We do not beleive that the Holy Eucharist is symbolic only, that the sacraments do not exist, that the Mother of God is just another woman. These fundamentalists are the same people who say we “worship” Mary, the Saints and statues, and who call the Church the “great whore of Babylon” and the Holy Father the “beast”.

Yet these anti-Catholic fundamentalists are the people many say they agree with, while putting down people we are closer to theologically like Anglicans and Lutherans, yes we snear at those people because a lot of them are liberal politically.

I always thought that the Catholic Church is the one true church, the only one founded by Christ, but many of you are changing it into a political party.

I agree much more with Anglicans and Lutherans who are much closer to Catholic theology, (and by the way there are plenty of them who are fully Orthodox on Life issues and sexuality), than I do with Catholic hating fundies who lie about Catholic teachings and practice.

A lot of Fundies are very pro-life - they just happen not to be pro-Catholic as well 🙂

One thing that Catholics don’t realize is that all Protestants wil attain salvation if they accept Jesus Christ as their savior- which they do. The war between the Catholic and Protestant churches is more about staying in controll, which the Catholic Church is currently winning.
What!?!? There is a war? If there was (is) it certainly isn’t about control. There can be only one objective truth. Therefore, if there is more than one religion on earth, only one can claim the fullness of truth as two or more differing ideologies cannot, by definition, be the same. Two or more cannot simultaneously be “TRUE”.

If there is a “war” it should only be about sharing Truth with our separated brothers and sisters.

In answer to the question, if Lutherans believe in the real presence, they would be the closest.

How can you agree with a heresy? Arianism, Mohammedanism, Albigensianism, Protestantism and Modernism are the five(5) great heresies according to Hilaire Belloc. To those I would add Mormonism and maybe Scientology. All with the exceptions of Mohammedanism(Islam), Mormonism and Scientology have redeeming qualities, but I could never consider them.
Protestantism would have died out faster than Albigensianism or Arianism had it not been used by certain individuals as a land grab.
Wouldn’t Jehovah’s Witness-ism be in there too? I’d say that was a pretty big heresy, and not related to Protestantism in its beliefs.

I’m not sure if I’d like to say the Episcopal Church. They accept the 5 no-no’s:tsktsk: in the Voter’s Guide for Serious Catholics. They even accept contraception and I think they accept iconoclasm. Some even probably believe in the symbolic eucharist, Plus, remember what they did with the mass in NYC with the clown suits and circus acts. Also, the entire Anglican Communion contradicts the Biblical definition of the priesthood, Episcopate, and Diaconate. I don’t think it’s right to say they’re that close. They have an anything but Rome mentality.

I would say that the schismatic and heretical “Catholic” Churches are much closer. Such as the Old Catholics and Anglican Catholics, they’re somewhat protestant.

Growing up as an Episcopalian in rural Missouri, we were very close to the Catholic faith. This is still true in many Episcopal parishes. However the U.S. Episcopal Church has been moving away from Catholic thought for 40 years.
