Is the Catholic Church obligated to read all of the readings in their entirety (or at least short form) at the Easter vigil? The reason I ask is because at the parish where my family attended the Easter vigil, the readings were read in more of a skit form by multiple adults, much of the readings were skipped over, the sixth reading was completely omitted, and the reading about Moses leading the Israelites through the Red Sea was sung, almost like an opera-style version. I enjoy the readings and I like to be able to meditate on them and follow along, but the way it was done at the vigil seemed very distracting. Thank you for your help!

When it comes to the Old Testament readings at the Easter Vigil only readings 1, 3, & 5 are required to be read. Reading 1 can be chosen from the short or long form, but 3 & 5 only have one form. Readings 2 (long or short form), 4, 6 & 7 are optional. The Epistle and Gospel must both be read.

Readings may be sung but this should be done in an appropriately dignified manner.

Readings should never be “acted out” as if in a skit.
