What religion are/were your ancestors?

I don’t mean distant ancestors, but if you know, you can add that too!

I mean parents, grandparents, great-grandparents. I thought it would be interesting to see our heritage/roots laid out in regards to religion. Some of us may know far back, and others might not know at all.

Just for fun :).

Me: Roman Catholic convert (raised in a variety of Christian denominations)

Mom: Unbaptized non-denominational Christian (raised somewhat Church of the Nazarene)

Dad: Roman Catholic (currently non-practicing)

Maternal grandmother: Raised Baptist (?), Church of the Nazarene in later years

Maternal grandfather: Raised Baptist, converted to Oneness Pentecostalism in later years

Paternal grandmother: Roman Catholic (currently non-practicing)

Paternal grandfather: Methodist (non-practicing)

Maternal great-grandmother (mom’s dad’s mom): Baptist

I don’t know any further back than that!

Hopefully this thread is in a good place, wasn’t sure if it should go here or back fence.
 
Me, my mom, my maternal grandparents, and my maternal great grandparents all grew up in the same church. I don’t mean the same denomination, I mean the same actual physical church building. In the early 1900’s that church became a part of a liberal Protestant denomination. Prior to adopting that it was probably just a generic rural Protestant church.

My father and his entire side of the family as far back as anyone knows are all Catholics. Its actually a wonder the bloodline survived with as many priests that have come out of my family.
 
My mother, as far as I know, came from a family of non-religious people. She converted to Catholicism b/c she was engaged to a Catholic man. He broke it off, but she was already in love with the Church and so she remained a Catholic. She was very devout and was a saintly woman. I had 10 years of by-the-book Catholic training before she passed.

My dad converted from nothing to Catholic to marry her. After she died, he didn’t do anything for years (no church, nothing). Then he married a woman he’d known growing up (civilly) 😦 and eventually was re-baptised as a Baptist. 😦 I pray for him all the time.

My husband’s family is Catholic. But not devout.

Hi, my dad is Catholic but doesn’t practice at all. I pray for him all the time too. And my mom who isn’t baptized. I’m always afraid for her because of this. So I know how you feel.
 
Pretty boring here…all relatives as far back as I can go (to great grandparents) were all Roman Catholic.
 
Me: Baptised Lutheran but became a Catholic convert this last Easter
Mother: Baptised catholic but not raised in the church, currently non practicing anything
Father: Baptised Lutheran, but non-practicing
Maternal Grandmother: Baptised Polish Catholic but stopped practicing shortly after my mother was baptised (there was a falling out with the church when it came time to baptise my uncle)
Maternal Grandfather: Lutheran but did not practice
Paternal Grandmother: Lutheran practicing
Paternal Grandfather: Lutheran practicing
Thats all that I am aware of.

Well, what I forgot to add is that my dad passed away in 1993. So I pray for his soul. I know he didn’t get the last rites before he died and he hadn’t been to Catholic Mass in decades before that. I pray that God has mercy.

Oh yes, I know you’ve mentioned that before. I’ll pray for your dad, please pray for my parents too.
 
My parents were agnostic/atheist and openly hostile toward religion.
Maternal grandmother raised Methodist became a Baptist upon marriage
Maternal grandfather Baptist from infancy to death
Paternal grandparents no religious faith

Oddly my paternal grandparents’ children did join what I’d call non-mainstream relgions. One daughter converted to LDS, the other became a 7th Day Adventist. None of the others were religious.

Not a single Catholic in my family for as far back as I could check. The Holy Spirit had His work cut out with me. But of course He succeeded.

My relatives as far back as anyone knows were and are various types of Protestant, on my mother’s side Holiness/Pentecostal types, on my father’s Presbyterian. My grandfather was named for Paul Bunyan and his brother for D.L. Moody. My father is a Protestant missionary.

My husband’s family is also Protestant as far back as we can tell. His grandfather is Protestant minister, too.

When we converted, they were … not best pleased. :rolleyes:

We are the only Catholics to be scrounged up anywhere in our lines. 🤷
 
Both sides of my family are catholic. I can go back to my great great grandparents on both sides. The mother side goes all the way back to Poland and my fathers side is Irish Catholic.

My Husband not so.

His paternal side is Sicilian Catholics, BUT his mother was raised Lutheran and Grandma was Calvinist in the Dutch reformed Church. His Grandmothers side would be rolling in their graves if they knew their Holland Heritage is now all Catholic!! LOL 😛

Mom’s parents, grandparents, and on as far back as I can trace: Catholic
Dad’s father and grandparents: Lutheran
Dad’s mother and grandparents: Methodist and Presbyterian
 
Mom: Christian Church (aka Church of Christ Instrumental…from the Campbellite movement)
Dad: Presbyterian

Maternal Grandparents: Nothing (my mom started going to church on her own when she was in primary school)
Paternal Grandparents: one Presbyterian and one Baptist

Great-Grandparents: Mom’s side: Church of Christ and Jewish
Dad’s side: Baptist and Presbyterian

GGGrandparents: Mom’s side: Jewish with the Germans, Anglican with the English
Dad’s side: Baptist & Presbyterian

GGGGrandparents: Mom’s side: Jewish, Anglican
Dad’s side: Presbyterian & Baptist

GGGGGrandparents: Mom’s side: same as above
Dad’s side: sames as above

GGGGGGrandparents: Mom’s side: Jewish, Anglican, French Catholic
Dad’s side: Presbyterian…somewhere back there has to be Catholic, being Scottish before moving to the Colonies…
 
Everybody on my Mother’s side are/were Italian Catholics going back generations to Italy.

My Father’s side are Church of the Nazarene, at least since the Holiness revival in the early part of the 20th century. (The parent denomination is Wesleyan Methodist, I believe.) I do not know what Protestant denomination they were before, whether it was Methodist or not.

My Father was baptized Catholic before he was married to my mother, but never practiced the faith, ever. They were divorced when I was very young, and he died as a member of the Church of the Nazarene.

My Family:

Mom: devout Catholic
Maternal grandmother: devout Catholic
Maternal/Maternal great-grandmother: Catholic (don’t know how devout)
Maternal/Maternal great-great-grandmother: Catholic
Maternal/Maternal great-grandfather: devout Catholic
(don’t know about *his *father, but I assume at least a cultural Catholic)

Maternal grandfather: non-practicing and from a cultural, but somewhat hostile-to-Catholicism-as-an-organized-religion background. (Little story): He was deeply, deeply in love with my grandmother that when she died in '78 he was so heart-broken that he determined if she was right about this Catholic thing all along, then Heaven the only way he could ever be with her again. So he started attending Mass weekly - perhaps initially for selfish reasons:o - but eventually became devout himself and ended the last years of his 19-year widowhood attending daily Mass.🙂

Don’t know much about my father’s line (faith-wise) any further than that, but they were at least cultural Catholics, and probably practicing ones.

And, going back about eighteen centuries, I assume my ancestors were all Pagans of the Celtic, Iberic, Visigoth, Vandals, Sabine, Latini, and Etruscan varieties.😃
