What Religions believe in the Rapture?

When did people start believe in the Rapture?

I’m not sure any one “religion” holds to the belief in the rapture of the church. One will find them in every church and denomination around. A very good friend of mines mother is Catholic, she makes sure he gets all the latest “rapture” literature and tapes to warn him. She sent out letters to her six children that should be found “missing” with a host of others, they go to her home where she has left a box with a taped recording in it explaining what has happened.

I have conservative evangelical relatives who are ardent “rapture” believers…I have acquaintences in the “Friend’s Church” who’s meeting is split over the issue.

I believe most of the dispensationalist traditions hold to a belief in a “pre-tribulation rapture.” As I understand this belief began toward the end of the 19th century due to some visions a young woman had and a Plymouth Brethren minister took them to heart, by the name of John Darby.

In our escapist culture and the “fear mongers” who see satan and demons around every corner and a conspiracy in every government plan, the “rapture” has found fertile ground. To me, the whold “mark of the beast”, “rapture”, “false prophet”, “7 year tribulation” is something out of a fantasy novel…a bad one at that…however I have many conservative Christian acquaintences and some more “liberal” acquaintences who watch the newspapers daily to find “evidence” that the “beast” is in our midst.

God’s Church is here to stay…it is the Body of Christ in our world, I can’t believe he would remove his Presence to keep those whom he has sent to minister in a very dangerous world “safe”.

I’m sure if we spoke to Christians in many third world contries where ethnic and religious purgings were common place, they would testify they were going through the “great tribulation” already…

the catholic church believes in the rapture. Christ will come at the end of the age(world). easy.

Most Christians do believe in a “rapture” of sorts similar to what you state, but the OP wasn’t about the “of sorts rapture”, but the “James Darby” type of “rapture”.

As I understand the “rapture” doctrine, the Roman Catholic church rejects it as do most main line and Orthodox traditions.

The rapture is really just the first resurrection when Jesus returns, after the last trumpet.

What Religions believe in the Rapture?
I cannot speak for other religions, but Buddhism has no concept of the Rapture. The closest equivalent I can think of is the birth of the Maitreya, the future Buddha, though that will not be associated with mass levitations or anything like that.

I believe the Catholic and Orthodox churches, as well as the Reformed denominations have no tradition of such a teaching and reject the doctrine, in part because they cannot find any reference to it amongst the early church fathers.
Some here will quote from the NKJV John 14:2-3, Phil 3:20-21, 1 Cor. 15:49-55 as proof of the ‘rapture’.

I don’t like using the word rapture when speaking of the dispensational belief. I do not in any sence believe dispensationally but like an earlier poster said, I believe in rapture. I also agree with that posters view of rapture.
The Majority of evangelical Churches teach dispensationalism even to the point of placeing the devil in heaven at present. They believe what was shown to St. John in the revelation are all things that have not yet happened. Aparently, past history means nothing. The idea that St. John was shown things both past present and future also escapes them.
While there are some Amill evangelical Churches they are not common. So who adheres:
Almost all Baptists(SBC, Putitan, Freewill Independent, ect ect)
The AoG
The CoG
Independent Pentecostal fellowships
or in short, about 25% of those calling themselves Christian.
Most are not thinking the advent can occure till the Mosque on the Hill is torn down and a temple is rebuilt on that spot.
It became popular in the 1800’s but it’s a bit older in origin.
Most Liturgical Protestants (Methodist, Lutherans, Episcopals and Presbyterians) don’t hold this therory and believe Christ’s Kingdom is now.
The therory is not agreed uponin unity with dispensationalist. Some say, they fly away before a great seven year tribulation and others say it happens 3 and a half years later (or pre-trib vs mid trib) It’s also where a lot of distrust of the catholic Church comes from as many are teaching that a guy called the Antichrist will be a Roman Pope.
The more you look into it the stranger and more unbiblical it becomes. In the KJ version of the Bible, St. John hears a voice calling him to heaven, “Come up hither”. It’s widely taught that this is actually the Rapture of the saints insted of a command to St. John. Also when St. Paul says he would not have us ignorant (concerning death) in 2Thess. they point to this as the flying away.
For it to be true, it require three advents of Christ but they say no as Christ “only” decends as far as the clouds. They think the word "Israel means the Jews and not the Church and expect all this post rapture stuff to happen in geographical Israel. The second (or third)Advent included. It’s at best, a poor and worldly interpretation of the Book of the Apocalypes.

If you mean “pre-millennial, pre-tribulation rapture”, it’s believed only by dispensationalists who will be among the first to fall down and worship Antichrist when s/he appears.

That the Christ’s faithful will be gathered to meet Him at His return in taught in Scripture, but it’s when He returns as Judge on the Last Day.

Well, help me if I am wrong, but i did not think buddhism taught the idea of God. It would seem quite contrary to their beliefs to believe in anything like the rapture wouldn’t it?

With respect to our Christian Brethren that believe this, as I know they are doing their best to follow Christ, just as we are… I have often wondered this myself…

Why?

If the Rapture is suppose to occur before the tribulation and, effectively, before the beast is truly revealed, then it is possible that since the rapture is suppose to happen first, they may not think the beast is the beast since the rapture did NOT happen.

For them, it would be impossible for the beast to reign if the rapture has not occurred, and thus, they fall victim to the beast since in there it is impossible for the beast to arrive BEFORE the rapture…

Anyway, just a thought

In Christ

No, the rapture of modern pop culture is about a second second coming and no we do not believe He’s coming again and then AGAIN…

I worry about how some of my Baptist friends will keep their faith if they have to undergo persecution here in America. After all, dispensationalists believe that they will be whisked away before they have to suffer any pain.😦

What?? Please provide a reference for that. I don’t believe it is true.Where did you hear the devil is in heaven??

I you have an interest in the Rapture, the Left Behind series is an excellent fictional depiction of what may happen. It’s amazing how one could see this actually happening.

Left Behind books are not acceptable.
