My father was a United Methodist from New Orleans, mom a Baptist from western Louisana. I was raised UMC and occainsionally visted other mainline churches of dad’s New Orleans friends who also settled in Los Angeles. By my early teenaged years major sports started broadcasting early Sunday games to the west coast and we became Christmas and Easter Christians.
Dad died just before I finished high school. By then I was an atheist to all but my family. For about 20 years the only service I attended was my little brother’s. He had become a Minister Muhammed for the Nation of Islam. I would joke that my only religion was watching Touched by an Angel on TV. Then I was born again.
I first went to my childhood church, as suggested by Jewish talk show host Dennis Prager then branched out. And tried many other Christian churches. In my travels I found myself in a Foursquare church trying to rebuild after its celebrity pastor had left leaving a megachurch with a mostly empty building. It is there that I felt at home. A move sent me to another church, this time I sought out a foursquare church after two weeks, also in distress because its neighborhood is turning Chinese.
Then I fell in love with a Catholic girl who was a single mother, before me only married men in the Philippines looking for a side girlfriend attempted to court her. We have since married and this site is one of many I have bookmarked in my phone to check on during small breaks during the day.
