What rewards?

I am in discussion with a friend on the subject of salvation. In my first reply to him I stated the teachings of the church on salvation. He states that salvation is a “free” gift and you must first have it while still living in order for your works to be reviewed at judgment so that you may receive your rewards. But your salvation is never at risk - only your rewards. What is he talking about and where did he get it?
