What role does the English Monarch play in the CoE today?

This should be answered verily quickly and easily. If I remember my college Reformation class correctly it was the British Monarch who was titled the head of the Church of England (Originally Henry VIII). Is this still the situation today and if it is, what role does the English Monarch play in the Church? Or is she (I believe it would be Queen Elizabeth II ) more of a figure head like she is for Governmental purposes?

God bless

Henry was styled Supreme Head of the Church in England, by the Supreme Head Act/1534. This was changed, under Liz I, to Supreme Governor of the CoE and the State, by the Act of Supremacy/1559. The monarch still holds those titles. One means as much, practiaclly, as the other. The monarch reigns, but does not rule either realm, though ruling is done in the monarch’s name.

So then would the Monarch be the one who, for example, appoints the Bishop of Canterbury? Or does the Privy Council elect him in the Monarch’s name only and the Monarch actually has no say in the manner?

It’s done by the ruling party, in the monarch’s name.

Nope. Tony Blair is. The Prime Minister gets to pick the Archbishop of Canterbury from a two-person shortlist.
And he did this while he was not Catholic. Was he heading towards Catholicism? Did he perhaps do it on purpose :hmmm:

Rowan was something of a rising star, even before Blair. He was, IIRC, passed over for a bishopric in the 90s, because of his support for gay rights. Those chickens are now home.

And, as a curiosity, he is a rarity, an ABC not appointed from the CoE.

Is there a particular piece of work that made Williams a rising star? Or was it his body of work as a whole?

I always try to make it a policy to post this whenever this particular topic comes up, as it’s quite funny, to me. You simply have to watch this episode of Yes Prime Minister for a commentary on the modern Church of England and its bishops and entanglement with the British government. (3 parts):

I’ve been waiting for these.

started watching the first one, but i need more time. they look hilarious. sometimes i really enjoy british humor.
i had asked the same question once when i realized how unhappy i was about the current archbishop. who chooses him and how long will he be in office? that is when i was told he was chosen by Blair. i don’t think Blair chose him on purpose to make the Church of England look foolish. i think he probably knew how weak he would be and wouldn’t cause any waves.
can you imagine how Prince Charles will be if he ever gets the chance to become King?
he is open to all faiths i think.

Might divert some Brits from the Premier League and reality TV for, at least, a couple of weeks.
